Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Why don't you just quit?

Several people I know keep saying they'd be "so, soooo happy" if they were laid off. If that's actually true, how come none of them quit? Nobody is holding them here against their will. Why do I keep hearing "oh, I am not worried, I want to be laid off" when we all know it couldn't be further from the truth?

There is life outside Shell...and a lot of oil being produced and processed.

A lot of folks at Shell know little outside of it and I believe are afraid to step out of their bubble. This vastly undermines their potential and their wellbeing - they prefer the misery of poor management, continual reorgs and eroding fundamental business performance to even trying to speak outside. Why - mix of insecurity, false pride and golden handcuffs in terms of current/future benefits.

About ~100mmbopd being produced worldwide - is Shell the only place in the industry to find gainful/meaningful employment ?

Exxon is way outperforming Shell and is poised for even stronger returns. Shell is not the leader in Deepwater - Petrobras is. In the US, independents like Oxy, Conoco produce mor than Shell and have a lot more integrity in executing their strategy (no flip flopping).

Folks with real, transferrable skills & experience will easily find the next job/career path. Others who have made a living out of Shell specific processes and "people skills"...will hold on for dear life, live in the bubble and ride the coattails as long as they can.

I don’t know why people act like getting laid off from Shell is like getting cancer or something.

I mean if you’ve worked here 5 years, you know you’re playing musical chairs. Eventually it’s gonna be your turn to go.

Your friends here are fake friends. Your time here is temporary.

Just save money and don’t tie your identity to a JOB. Have some other hobbies. When you do get laid off, spend some time with the fam, watch your health and eventually you’ll find another JOB.

Again, it’s just a JOB. It pays the bills. Just don’t buy into the “Shell Life” and “We are Family” BS.

Getting laid off is like getting hit by a truck, even if there's a big payday at the end. It is a terrible, painful, crippling experience.

Still, I would rather get hit by a truck than work at Shell. God damn did I hate that place.

Don’t quit instead try quiet quitting and then get your exit check

Did you consider asking them, "why?" Only several people and you know them. As you couch it, it doesn't sound like they are complaining about Shell, they are stating that they are not worried.

You don’t get severance if you quit.

Why would you quit now if you get paid for a few more months, don’t need to do any work and then get a pay off?
