Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Anybody take COBRA?

I believe COBRA is free for so many days (while you decide if you want it), unless you need it then you start paying. Is that correct?

If you do take COBRA, can you stay on it until age 65 (Medicare)?
Also, did anyone take Citi's COBRA or is government healthcare cheaper?

Thanks in advanced, I'm just planning ahead!

What he meant is you don’t activate until you need it.

COBRA is not insurance per se. It's a law enacted to keep people from losing insurance when losing their job. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events. Qualified individuals may be required to pay the entire premium for coverage up to 102% of the cost to the plan.
So, it's the same plan you have now only you foot the entire bill. Your best bet is to shop around. You'll find much cheaper options.

COBRA free? No way, Jose'. You pay and it is very expensive. I just don't.

Free? It’s 102% ( what you pay+ citi portion +2% admin fee). Marketplace was not cheaper for me. At 65 Medicare should be cheaper
