Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

Potential layoffs tied to medical claims??

I really don't think this is the case due to the legal and ethical risk but I am a little curious if any others that have been laid off have also had significant medical claims. I'm talking chronic health issues that have resulted in hundreds of thousands, even millions over the last couple years. I recently discovered their insurance is self-funded, which is probably why UMR isn't that great, but also means they foot a significant portion of the employee medical claims (at least here in the US). Yes, stop-loss coverage that should help cap payouts but if triggered that premium can significantly increase in subsequent years.

Crude example based on research: Difference between 5% (150) of 3K employees have $250K in claims v 0% "high-cost" employees is approx a $55M vs $22M in healthcare cost (per year).

In a perfect world, leadership shouldn't be aware of health related concerns due to health privacy laws but you never know, especially if word gets out. Either way, I really don't think a company would stoop this low but I figured I'd ask to see if any others were impact we in similar situations.

FYI: My medical claims this year have been well over 500k as billed, probably about 1/2 that with UMR's discount. I'm still employed by Nielsen, but not expecting to be around much longer.

Depending on which state you are located in, there are states that allow an employee to request access to a list of varying records on your employment (Hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, etc).

IL has one. CA has one. Search Personnel Inspectable File and your state...reference it in your email to HR and request it all.
