Thread regarding VISA Inc. layoffs

Visa Singapore is still hiring non-tech personnel in tech roles during layoffs

Make this make sense.

https://www.visa.com.sg/careers/visa-tech-traineeship-program.html

In the midst of layoffs, Visa is still running stupid programs like this where they try to "train" non-tech people for a year before giving them roles as software engineers. Truly a slap in the face to existing software engineers who were laid off or even university graduates who had spent years developing their CS knowledge and engineering skills. On top of this, we are expected to take these people under our wing and provide "mentorship" which is a huge waste of time and also a non-promotable task.

If Visa deems that a bunch of randos are qualified to work on the systems after a 6 month bootcamp followed by another 6 months of on-job training, what does it say about the state of tech here at Visa? Are we a charity organization or a top tier tech company? There are close to 100 trainees at the moment all being paid thousands a month just to attend courses at a university, no one in AP tech should be laid off until these 100 people with 0 tech skills are let go first. Whoever is in charge of running these programs should be held accountable.

Can someone actually steady the ship and let's fu_king get serious now?

They are probably using trainees from random backgrounds to replace actually qualified engineers to cut costs. Why not just not convert them in the first place?

What’s worst about the whole “conversion” fiascos is the Ngee Ann Polytechnic cybersecurity trainees being converted into software engineering roles…

Nope, last I hear the funding from the SG govt has been cut as Visa was not able to hit their required quotas. Also you say there’s no obligation to hire but over 50% of trainees were converted. Anyone would tell you that number is far too much

The government in SG subsidies the majority of the salary these trainees get and Visa has no obligation to hire them after the traineeship ends. Basically Visa is getting very very cheap labor without having to take on the liability of a full time employee.

Agreed, these trainees would never be able to step into FAANG or any other top tech firm. We're trying to trim the fat, not add to it. Needing local tech talent is a lazy excuse since there are plenty of University graduates from the top 3 local unis that are already trained and available for the job. This program was created merely for senior management to craft some bullsh-t narrative on how they trained competent tech people in 1 year.

That program is to train local tech talent to reduce the number of FTs. The G required it.

The plan is to fire long tenured and difficult to manage employees and replace them with cheap nowhere else to go non technical trainees

Were software engineers laid off in singapore this time? Which org?

If not then why are you pressed? As long as trainees can do the job right?
