I’ve worked at several tech companies throughout my career. I experienced all kinds of crises and good periods. I got to know what professional success means and how you feel when work provides you with a sense of accomplishment and feeling of satisfaction. This past year has felt like the end of a career even if I’m far from retirement. Never felt worse at the workplace. Dell has become such a downer.

Worked for Dell for a whole 8 months before getting laid off. The whole time was very stressful as a Field Service Engineer 1 because I was in no way qualified to do what I was doing. When I wasn't shadowing my senior (a one year requirement), I was being sent into environments alone to change out hard drives or replace some sort of equipment that I had no business operating because I didn't know what the heck I was doing. So...why was I doing it then, you ask? Because my manager at the time signed off on the documents pre-emptively that I knew the work when I didn't. The rules say that I have to demonstrate competency to my senior before the manager signature. Also, it said that I needed to have a full year of shadowing before being turned loose. What's my point? It was so stressful that I had anxiety attacks and had to get mental health meds just to keep from running away and screaming. Why they think that putting a person in that kind of position is helpful, I'll never know. I wish that I were part of a strong UNION that protected workers and their livelihood like how previous generations had before me. Life really su-ks right now due to low income....side gigs in IT is just about it.
Dell needs to Layoff some key toxic hires as part of Vet or DEI quotas they made at higher levels ( Sr. Dir and VP) on the biz side. Those people have been jumping ships in the name of AI. But good news is you know their leadership is worthless so look now for opps outside.
Their turn will come in future. At least they wont sink you in the process.
I'm sorry. Please seek mental health because depression is very hard to get out of alone. When you're feeling up to it, reach out to your network and try to find another job. I hope you find your joy again very soon and get on the right path for success and happiness!
Anyone catch the quarterly update? I thought I heard we are on track for 100 bonus. I wonder if that will hold @ 100. And if remote workers will be eligible or take a smaller amount like 50%.
Soul draining experience
Agree. Worst career decision I ever made leaving a great company & job to join Dell. Best decision I ever made was leaving.
Your first problem was calling Dell a technology company. Dell is a commodity company that hasn't been a "technology company" in many years
Chin up! It’s not that bad here at Dell!
Take the rest of this month to refine your resume, practice a few mock interviews to sharpen your skills, and start sending out applications as soon as budgets open up in January or February.
It’s a great time to hit the ground running and make the most of those fresh opportunities!
Unfortunately, you are not alone. Makes me want to leave the tech industry all together.
It's time to look for a new job! Reach out to friends at other companies and hope you can get a referral!
That's why it's known as He-l Computers.
Yes. To say working at Dell is toxic is an understatement.
one is not really accomplishing anything meaningful. Just keeping the dated cog going.
Stay too long and it will be soul destroying
