I have been through he-l at this company for over 20 years. In that time I have seen many non deserving people promoted and others who should have been not. You had to know how to play the game dirty. Nice guys finished last always. Some good guys made it but they were few. Exxon did not discriminate as it was an equal opportunity offender. Exxon had extreme prejudice for non conformers and persons who did not bow to the leaders. A person who had no skills as a designer or engineer once told me that I should be grateful for the pay and benefits. This pseudo engineer was a bootlicker and was given the position by a friend. I will tell you why I spread the truth and tales of injustice about exxon. In am like a dog that is fed (paid)but not treated well. I am given food and water. I am (ranking) beaten and (pip) scolded for all I do. Tortured even to a point. Nothing the dog does is good enough or correct. The dog is grateful to the master for the food but is angered by the treatment. Other dogs are loved and cherished by the masters. The bad dog (me) is keep outside on a chain while the good dogs(favorites) are kept inside. So eventually I the bad dog will bite the master. We were come into exxon vicious we were created monsters by years of systemic torture. It is animal and human nature pure and simple. Some employees like dogs can take all the torture and not bite. I could and cannot take the torture and will bite the masters. So I will eat at exxon but will attack when I am attacked.
So you have to ask yourself are you going to be a good dog or a bad dog.
All I ever wanted was to be of use and do the work I was good at but was told There were other tasks for me. My talents and experience have been wasted at exxon. I have not been allowed to thrive in this dysfunctional environment. So yes I believe you can bite the hand that feeds you.

We stick around for 7 to 10 years it rakes a while to figure it out. They treat your younger years. It gets worse the older you get. You get duped and then stuck. If you want to give up a milion or more then you can do it. You will feel entitled as you have given a long hard attempt to do your best. It was not as bad 25 years ago. It was more tolerable. Expectations were not as they are now. The dysfunction was not as severe. So excuse me if I stay around a little more for the payoff. You call me stupid but I will be laughing all the way to the bank. If you leave they win and they don't deserve to. One employee was told if they did not like the system they should look for another job. This is the exxon playbook they want to push you out.
What’s worse: the Company and the way thy treat employees or someone that regocnizes this and still hangs around for 20 years🤔
My time is near 2 years away so I am a philosopher and educator to the masses that will listen. I have seen employees unfairly singled out and targeted in the past. I tried to get them to fight and bite back. So my time is not just spent comparing us to dogs it is mostly spent planning retirement. I just want employees to realize that Exxon is not everything. I work about two hours a day on Exxon stuff and the rest on what I will do after 55. The point is it is normal to feel angry for being treated unfairly. I did go to a therapist for the lovely treatment at Exxon. The person who posted about some therapist specializing seeing people with work place disfunction is correct. I was told by my therapist they see many people with the same employers coming in with the same problems. I was told by my therapist some of their patients were in in the oil and gas field. Its good to see a therapist who has seen the problems at Exxon. It is as if employees have gone through the same thing as me before and the therapist knows how to help. The dog analogy was something the therapist used to help me understand my feelings and anger. I don't go to the therapist now because all my Exxon worries have passed. It is not that the place in any better in fact it has gotten worse it is because I am NRE. I don't care anymore about ranking. The supervisor can try all the want to try to make do more and it wont work. There is nothing that they can do to intimidate me or motivate me to do more. They are motivating me to do less actually. I got the big zero raise as well a few days ago. Young employees listen to the oldsters as we have seen it all at Exxon. Heed the warnings and you have been warned. History has a way of repeating itself.
If you put as much time into finding a new job as you do into comparing yourself to dogs you would probably be happier.
Leave and go get some counseling
Everything is NOT a 10. In 20 years will it matter that you were treated bad by a company? Find something else that works for you. You owe nothing to a megacorp and they owe you nothing.
Why do people stay at a place where they are not appreciated? I can tell the years of poor treatment changed many of the people who frequent this site. Fear, suspicion, bitterness, contempt, anger….
We have choices. If you can’t disassociate your emotions from the company politics, hurtful words, unfairness, actions, then you may consider seeking employment somewhere else where you will be happier.
It’s a decision. I know some can’t leave financially because they are too close to retirement. They felt betrayed. For others, I think their sense of identity is intertwine with the company, position, or the fancy title. When you don’t let go, you can’t move toward.
When we understand than we offering a service to work for the company and not to fall into the game that the company is giving us a “job”. We will be free to change the balance between the company us to our side.
