Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Enlightening comments from BB

Suggest reading yesterday’s eye opening transcript from BB’s conference call with Goldman Sachs. Sit down and pour yourself a stiff drink first.

BB’s opinion (disdain) of 3Mers comes through LOUD and CLEAR. He—and his buddies—think you all are overcompensated mediocre performers.

Highlights:

“ We have a culture at 3M. It's Minnesota, people call it Minnesota NICE but it's -- we have a culture where everyone gets an A.”

“ There's not a lot of differentiation between in performance inside the company. And I'm not sure if it's been there for a while or it came from COVID or what happened but the reality is, is we have to have clear objectives, top down inside the company for every individual…”

“ So number one, as we turn the corner to '25, it's a much more rigorous back-based detailed objective-setting process and then paying it for performance. It sounds simple. It's something that I've done before and we'll make sure that we do this here as well.”

“ And those metrics flow deep into the organization into all the nonexecutive population. The place where we will see a change going into next year is in the long-term incentive plan.”

3M is a he11ho1e.

I know there are many operations & production folks waiting eagerly for the golden handshake. Many are just hanging on out there.

I suspect BB might continue to shed 20% of plants & DC. Get your seat belts tightened.

Florida people are old and lazy. They tend to make up bogus metrics and try to hold people accountable to them. They don’t take responsible for guiding the ship and pull out old playbooks that have already been played!

Bill's a Florida guy now. He flies into Maplewood a few times a month. Word is Tireman is running the ship most days.

Classic how they generalize about Minnesotans. Not the first time I have heard this. I’m not a Minnesotan and most of the people at HQ at this point are not even from Minnesota. Must sound like you’re super aggressive if you make up BS like this and say it out loud! Where is Bill from? What are people like there if you want to make up BS?

Sometimes I wonder if they realize that each plant is unique with special equipment. Even if the equipment is similar, it's not that easy to move production from one plant to another.

Technically BB could consolidate another 20% factories and DC and improve the profitability. But no plant directors or managers want to give up theirs . Hard decisions needed

BB is correct about the urgent need to bump up the utilisation of factories. We are part of the top38 plants and yet our utilisation is at most in 60%ish. Really bad to be cost competitive

Look directly to BB’s own words regarding restructuring. He’s not done and there’s more store.

Current restructuring:

“We're about 85% complete. So we're not done. We've got more in Q4, a little bit more tailing into '25. And we've got to continue to execute well on restructuring and avoid the bleed back into the organization which sometimes happens when you do your restructuring…”

Future restructuring (or in BB parlance, “opportunities”):

“But when I step back and look at -- as we go forward, what do I think about the next set of opportunities ahead of us.
The fact is we have 110 factories even after the restructuring. We have 95 distribution centers even after some of the restructuring. And we were operating our factories at about 50% to 55% utilization…So we've got to like figure this out and we've got to simplify the construct of our manufacturing base…. what's the factory of the future, the network of the future really look like? It should be less than 110 and less than 95 distribution centers. What the number is, we'll figure that out as we go.”

Buckle your seatbelts.

BB should start scrutinising those layers added during A3M time. He can get rid of the regional reporting layer and the results would be still unchanged

It’s good that BB lock in the LTI eligible for those JG16+ and hold them accountable for the results. Don’t deliver? Time to go

At least BB are here for the long haul, reinventing the company from the ground up.

“ So I'm just -- I'm here for a period of time. The reality is, I mean, the steps that we're taking, the things I'm laying out, it is not rocket science.”

Welp. Nevermind. He and his friends are just passing through, reshuffling some chairs, enriching themselves during their brief stay.

Mediocre Monkey Managers should be removed from this company.
Unfortunately BB is sorrounding and will continue to sorround himself with these incompetent medicocre monkeys who steal their engineers/techs/researchers ideas and clappily present their findings.

These id--ts got rid of everyone that was performing in their roles and laid them off because they either made too much ( because they were high performing and contributing) or they were too old ( in their eyes ) but still key contributors.
Next year it will be “ we are starting this new program which we allow our people 15% time to work on new ideas - we think this will drive innovation “ I swear these guys just say whatever they have to to keep the stock at the same level and hold onto the throne one more year. What a farce this company is!!

Yep, more pain for the working class in 3M to come in 2025. Keep up the flogging until morale and productivity improves. A sure shot way to increase organic growth.
