Thread regarding Optum layoffs

If you only get a meets expectations, what do you do?

If my supervisor comments how well I do through the year and
never says hey you do X wrong or fix X, through the whole year, and I constantly do things that I’m not asked to “help out” or be a volunteer for projects, and I get a “meets” only - what is my incentive to do more? What do you do?

I ask what do I need to do to move up, the manager laughed in my face.

As a manager--I have no say in my teams ratings (navi). My director tells me what ratings to give. When we question it we get retaliation.

You're fighting over who is head bagger in a grocery store. In the end, we are still 1 of thousands of low level worker bees, bagging groceries.

It ki-ls your incentive to work hard so you quiet quit. I gave myself a yearly raise by working 30hrs a week unless they were expecting a critical assignment, then I shone best I could. Didn’t matter if I worked 30hrs or 50hrs a week, I got the same tiny raise! The trouble now is they load your company laptop with key logger and other spyware so if they want to they can see you aren’t sitting there working. So be careful and just realize you made a mistake working for an Indian company and plan your exit!

Like it happened to me, I contested my 3 (meets expectations) after a year of working late and countless hours to find retaliation. They moved me to a department kept giving me tasks and additional work, which I mastered. After 5 leadership changes my position was "eliminated ". So to me challenging your evaluation is a waste of you time, the company doesn't have the appropriate path for managers to explain the why or much less to change the rating, as comes along with compensation and bonus.

Whether you go above and beyond or do bare minimum, you will get a 3 just like 80 percent of the co. working hard ain't worth it.

You can listen to all this hyperbole but the poster who said, "Bring a CAN-DO Attitude" is on the money. That means understanding you will give yourself excuses and others will try and put limitations upon you. Don't let that affect you. Fight through. Be the best you can be and it will work in your favor.

Its not personal its a popularity contest. Always has been always will be. A 3 is not bad the majority of employees get that. Just means no merit no bonus. If you get a 2 that means PIP. It is all out of your control since layoff has zero to do with performance. Ride it out. A 5 rating is the unicorn almost never happens and is just an indicator you are on promotion " high potential " track. If you get one you will never see another unless you get promotoed. 4 rating can happen but there are only so many to go around. if manager has all high performers sorry someone is going to get bent over to fit the predetermined distribution. Feb of 2024 the die has already been cast for your rating being put to paper this month. Just writing the back story written to the detrmined outcome

Meets expectations means you are fair game to make the next RIF happening 1/16/2025. Oh by the way names were already chosen way before the reviews are done, the rating is given to justify your name on the list. Wonder why some people are getting 5’s and it’s a total head scratcher? It’s because when they RIF you - they can justify why it was you and they kept the younger employee employed with an artificially high rating. All a scam seen it happen for 15 years now

"Secret Sauce" formula debunked. Higher level leaders have privately stated 50% bonus funding again this year with promotions being rare to non existent (as this/last year), and similar raises to last year for high level performers.

Here is your SECRET SAUCE: You want to focus on a promotion into a different Title. That is where the real salary increases occur. Continuously ask for more, take on additional responsibilities. Mentor younger coworkers, show up with a positive can-do attitude. Be a ray of sunshine, build rapport. Don't stop learning and keep developing your marketable skills. You too can be a VP.

Managers are trapped and prevented to giving many 4 or 5s

Pull on the intranet the rating Eval guidance hr has on what qualifies as a 4 or 5 as a manager I’ve had to push this against my director or Vp who use unspoken rules

Unfortunately by your Eval time it’s too late the monies have been decided

Ironically I had to give back 50% of my funds for salary the last three years with no explanation the just wouldn’t give raises beyond 1%

It’s a slam they a lot money then don’t let you use it

Nothing really. You can be a very good employee but are given a 3 because too many managers within your dept gave 4s to others with your same grade level. It is an hr rule to only have a certain amt of 4s and 5s. Calibration is what it is called. Managers are given guidance and training to tell you how a 3 is a good score despite the paltry raise. I'm sorry but that is the reality.

If you get meets expectations it's time to find a new job. In fact, it was already time to do so. So many people here are worth so much more than the unfair treatment this company gives you. This is a company of zero ethics, fake values, and a bad culture.

Don't worry, things will get better. Keep your head up. You will grow so much more and enjoy life so much more at virtually most other companies.

Besides, if you're a person who wants to make the world a better place or want to start a family, you cannot feasibly do it here.

Let me fill you in on a little secret. Leaders are only allowed to have a about 2-3% of their staff rated as a 4 or 5. Anything beyond that has to undergo major scrutiny and senior vp approval. How do I know? I had too many 5s on my first stack ranking.
