hypothetically, what would happen if computer and monitor is not returned?

I sent my laptop back (couldn't use it anyway) but they never even asked for the monitor or other addition work/office things. So that worked out, anyway. Good luck
copy everything you can for evidence and turn it in
They could withhold severance payment and you may not be able to use a laptop without an active 2U email, but some people love $1,000 paperweights.
After that, they’d have to go after you legally. I’ll let you make the call on whether you think 2U has the competence and interest necessary to do so.
laptops are specifically listed in the severance paperwork that you sign (not sure about monitors), so they could potentially dock your severance payout the cost of a laptop replacement. Not worth it, just return it in the box they provide and be done with toxic, greedy, company.
Someone from University of Phoenix did that years ago and used it for leverage.
