Shell vs Blackrock

How far off is Shell from being operated like it was owned by Blackrock(or similar) ?

Seems like Wael and folks like him see the business not very different from how Blackrock would - a set of backboxes which either generate net cash or don't. Focus on shareholder return, trim/cut/merge boxes and shuffle players inside them to achieve improved cashflow perhaps but not fundamentally changed business fundamentals.

What do you think is Wael's next move ? Break Shell up (eg Marathon...downstream has outperformed after splitting) or make a big acquisition - BP ? I can't imagine him sitting still and working on fundamentals and setting up, committing to a coherent long term strategy (eg Exxon). Has to be something commercial and catchy....improving short term cashflow and shareholder returns.

He’s just in it to fatten his pockets with stock price target based compensation at the cost of the long term health of the company. His plan is to sell one asset a quarter to pad the books. This will meet cash flow targets and carbon targets. He will do this until shell is nothing but a… shell… then golden parachute away from the corpse.

It’s really really obvious. He isn’t gonna acquire a thing. We literally divested north sea 12 hours ago in disguise as a JV. It’s all about pumping capital efficiency numbers.

Shell has wasted money on bloated staff levels by any reasonable measure; overspending on exploration with no discoveries; and green energy projects with no prospects for returns. You don’t need to be a brilliant strategist to stop digging the hole deeper.
