Black Friday Store Visit

Our store was crazy busy on Black Friday and our Market Leader came in and made the managers walk the store with him so he could point out recovery opportunities and some sign changes that were missed in a few places. We all had to follow him around while we had lines a mile long and then go back to have a meeting about what our plan was for recovery this weekend, all the while our Theatro's were blowing up and only Captains were responding to calls for help.

After spending three hours distracting us, Mr. Obvious thankfully left to visit the other big store in the market and torment the other team by pointing out things they were already aware of, but just didn't have time to get to since we can't even come close to filling our hours. How demotivating.

Once when I was at Sears, the Regional Vice President and District Manager made a Black Friday Visit. The customers saw them walking around and demanded that they help out on the floor and with the long lines at the registers. The RVP and DM bailed out on our store so quick and the customers saw them leaving and really let them have it as they scrambled out the door. We laughed so hard and we didn't see the RVP or DM for months after that.

There are still good people in roles on the division teams. My entire division team was working 12 hour days Friday and Saturday in the big doors recovering, filling in, and servicing customers. No distractions, no walk, they worked hard alongside all of us in the store.

Be thankful that districts, oops, I mean divisions, have 25+ stores and these leaders can only find time to visit a handful of stores during the holiday season. Big day visits have always been a distraction, but we used to have more colleagues and more managers, this allowed for visits that only marginally derailed direction and service levels.

Look at the tenure of the senior leadership team in the field, times have changed but the old school mindset continues. Unrealistic expectations in the face of limited resources and a heightened sense of desperation as the annual hunger games get ready to commence in January, have divisional and regional leaders scrambling to show how they are making a difference and contributing more than their peers in the hopes that when the music stops next month, they will still have a chair.

Pretty sure I know who you’re talking about. There was a visit on Black Friday in the store I was covering, DVP and Operations Director both there. Saturday they were in another store I was in. Distracting when you’re trying to run a store on one of the 2 busiest retail days of the year. Common sense does not prevail at Macys LOL

Terrible. The customers in line should have told the exec to get on a register and shut up. Amazing have a visit on Black Friday. Employees can't even get to the bathroom.
