If layoffs have taught us anything, it's that how good you are at or dedicated to your job doesn't matter. Being an experienced and skilled employee and a good performer is probably more of a burden. Good employees are costly, that’s the bottom line. While you are still here, just do your job without any extra effort. That way, you won't have any regrets when they blindside you.

I worked there 25 years multiple promotions over the years. In fact, my boss and I had just discussed another promotion 2 months before I was laid off. I was a aKey contributor and project leader on multiple projects over that time earning millions of dollars for the company and at the end of the day NONE of that mattered- I was still laid off. So contributions don’t matter, you are still a name on a page and a cog in the wheel they think they can replace.
My division just promoted a new person to Sr. Level and I barely know this person and her contribution. I worked with this division for 22 years.
Just wait till this company targets you instead of doing the right thing. HR are manager sheep to keep their own jobs secure. The company cares more about liability over their people. You're basically playing who can keep their own job longer by throwing other employees under the bus. Most of the employee cutting is being done unlawfully by management targeting employees who are deemed conflicting problems or potential liability risks. Document everything and prepare yourself. This won't end until 3m is nothing but over paid high ups and the company dissolves, sells off, or goes to a cheaper country. Stop thinking that if you keep your head down or throw your coworker in the target line that the next wave won't be you. Prepare.
Annual performance evaluations never worked; they always ended up serving as a way to promote the boss’s favorites.
Anyone who is silly enough to bust their butt after another round of layoffs to make up for the work left behind by your former teammates is silly enough to get whacked the week before Christmas.
Do your 40 hours. Period. If people refuse to play along, the boss will now look bad since the team output will decline. Fewer people. Fewer results.
The 3M of the 1980s and 1990s was truly a great place to work. Certainly the best place in the twin cities.
Been gone a year now after being blindsided last November. So sorry to hear what ya'all are going through with no positive future in sight at 3M.
