Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Overworked and burnt out

I don’t know if it’s me having a problem with setting the boundaries, but I work so much that I’m no longer capable of switching off even when I have some free time for myself. Most of my colleagues are in the same boat. Mgmt is really pushing us hard, setting unrealistic goals and expecting us to constantly be in overdrive. I’m beginning to think it’s about control and not results.

The heist … pull in billions from US citizen/corp … convince workers in US to train “global” workers … funnel US dollars to “global” communities and skim off the top to pay yourself huge bonuses.

We are working long hours as a pawn for the heist.

They say life is supposed to be easier today thn what it was centuries ago. I wonder how many hours a day our ancestors had to work hunting and gathering amongst others tasks as well. Lol

The current and former CEO's always talked about how we all needed to be "restless" and how they would hold us accountable for working to do blah blah blah (while they sat and collected their massive multimillion $$ salaries & bonuses). I also remember during one of the nonsense rah rah "weeks" (maybe Culture week?) there was a doc who was supposed to inspire all of us. She starts work at 5:30am because she said that's what it takes to be excellent. Makes all her own patient calls before and after hours. Thought that was telling how this doc was supposed to inspire us. Right.

"The plan is working. Make life miserable and they will quit for free."

It started last year with record breaking profits and no raises and scaled back bonuses for anyone grade 30 and above. I'd imagine with losing customers from the security incident, there will be more cuts than normal and no raises/ bonuses again.

You have no idea how burnout has impacted you, until after being laid-off and you try to resume your normal life and it is difficult to reintegrate. You then realize you have grown so far from your family and your life was just work for few cents an hour to meet the insane metrics assigned to you.

Well if everyone quits they have succeeded in their endeavor. This is what they want. They are under scrutiny by the providers due to all the news about layoffs. The service is cr-ppy at best. So the more news the more attention to the plan. They are trying to calm all these people down but what providers, consumers don’t realize is that they have no intention of doing what they say they will do. This company has no integrity. If you work here do it for the check. Cause that is what the leadership does. Most of them leave as rich people off the backs of the employees.

You are NOT alone. Feeling the exact same. They don’t care about their employees at all. They are laying off a bulk of their US employees in January and then replacing them with global resources. Not sure how any of this is legal. This company is not what it used to be to be. Such a shame

My entire team is looking for different positions outside of the company.

It’s not just you, my team is the same. Unsustainable productivity with your reward being even more work and defunded projects. Hooray!

High performers often derive their sense of self worth and identity from work, so it is hard to turn off that validation loop. Have you tried treating your own time like a second job? It sounds stupid but it works. I had a hard time relaxing because I had forgotten the value of rest after being on so much. If I just wanted to read a book it felt like I should at least be learning something for my job instead of reading something amazing and creative. Or checking email all the time when I wasn't on the clock. Pu-e!!! Talking about work with my friends because I had nothing in my own life to talk about. So start treating your life like a second job. What would a high performer look like in your own life, with your own interests? Take some guilt free time to relax and just imagine the life you want. It's OK if there is still your job in that life, just make sure there is time and energy to achieve the life of your dreams beyond your job.

It’s very true. People (including me) that are high performers are feeling burned out, not set up for success and just helpless on how to make it all work out.
