Mark Murphy - one of the best CIO’s? Hardly

I’m literally laughing out loud right now to see that Mark Murphy is on the Forbes CIO next list.

The call out: In the three years Mark Murphy has served as the Chief Information and Digital Officer for 3M, he’s both moved over 92% of the company’s enterprise technology to the cloud and reduced the amount the company spends on technology to facilitate it by over a third. He also helped 3M launch health care device company, Solventum, in 2023, which took in $8.5 billion in revenue last year. Murphy led the push to create a GenAI Center for Excellence in 2023, which both trains employees on efficient artificial intelligence practices and suggests the best 3M products to fit users’ needs.

He had nothing to do with the cloud move decisions, migration efforts, etc. This was all done before him by John Turner. All he has done is to come in and cut costs, get good people to leave, etc. What a joke!

MM should be embarrassed by this Forbes posting. He knows that he didn’t actually do anything. If he isn’t embarrassed then there is something seriously wrong with the guy!

MM is by far the worst leader I have ever worked directly for in my entire career. No ideas, just cutting the budget. Takes credit for other people’s work, and simply does care about the team/people. This is a perfect example of why 3M is doomed.

There ARE lots of opportunities in IT. If you're an external candidate. IT has never been so top heavy - S&S area has soooo many new unnecessarily high level roles from outside. Not to mention the # of SVPs. Give Turner this award. He was able to do far more. A true leader from every angle.

When Mark was challenged on opportunities within IT, his response (and I'm not joking here) was....well, you should be lucky that you get to work with great people and you can always look elsewhere. Meaning, be satisfied with the 3% raises and lack of promotion al opportunities. The guy is a jerk.

GenAI center of excellence is joke. These guys use plain GPT in backend and show us like they created great app called "navigator". Same time they blocking everyone by not providing API access to the engine. Complete monopoly to avoid anything build outside of IT.

Makes me sick to see this. I am sure he nominated himself, after giving the information to the 3M communications team draft a nomination that would make him "shine". He destroyed so many careers and is a horrible leader. Go to Linkedin and see all the people sharing and kissing xss.

This award is really just a close knit group of insider CIOs all giving each other handys. No one with any actual experience in 3M thinks the IT systems function well or that MM is a superb leader.
