The majority of those laid off are in their 50s and above. It feels like age discrimination is out of control here and nobody cares. Nobody is talking about it, not to mention trying to do something about it. Is this the case of "if it's not happening to me, I don't give a damn" or what?

You mean the people who can barely open a pdf?
I'm working on it. It won't be long...
Stop outsourcing and someone please buy Aetna out of CVS
It's hard to identify age discrimination because older colleagues typically have more experience and a larger paycheck and it's difficult to prove the decision wasn't financial vs. age.
Then why did they bring the boomer out of retirement to be CEO?
Do you not understand how making a legal issue of something works? You have to be personally impacted to make it an issue, no one else will have standing in order to turn it into a lawsuit. Anyone that was personally impacted and believes it was due to age or being part of another protected class should take it to an employment attorney and/or the EEOC. Complaining on this board is pi----g in the wind.
Legal does vet this for demographics. That being said, the next round will be the same but mostly Directors and Exec Directors. It's a sad day when someone who could be comfortable if laid off would recommend their staff go rather than themselves. There is no room for growth at Aetna due to these people who got to their senior level positions and never left. Can't climb the corporate ladder if your boss never leaves the upper middle rungs.
This is not true. . Layoffs were a mix an ages. Stop spreading false information.
From Aetna side, three layoffs in it's been a mix bag of ages and primarily mid-level management and doers.
If you're an old Executive counting on an a retirement just because you have a bigger title then the joke is on you. Everyone knows how hard it is to retire from a company these days.
I don't feel sorry for older Executives either they all seem to go right into a competitor company with the same title toteing their experience anyways.
Happened to me! Newbie and younger, however underperforming, was kept. I was laid off. Which is cr-p. We are more dedicated, knowledgeable, steady, ambitious, and still have many years left to work given the increase in the retirement age.
How many CEO’s, SVP’s, etc are under 50? That is knowledge and experience that can not just be absorbed by younger staff.
So if you remove race, s-x and other variables out of the equation, it is quite likely that the 50+ year old makes a larger salary and is not as aggressive career wise as the young blood coming out of college.
From a pure cost cutting exercise, any corporate would look at keeping the young aggressive stud over the 50+ year old.
As has been said multiple times, they are just looking at biggest bang for the buck, not tenure, loyalty to the brand etc. I know of many well respected 20/30+ people who got the chop just because the younger person made way less.
