Optum Engineering - It's just like working at the DMV

This is not a tech company.

I agree with the feedback. This is not a tech company anymore. This is a company who uses tech to try to eliminate humans from doing data entry or data processing. Shifting the same data from one platform to the next, complete rebuilds of systems missing critical features or ability to produce valuable insights. There is such a wealth of information available to help people live healthier lives but the focus is on FTE costs instead.

I have found that most posts on this site is by one angry disgruntled EX-Employee. He even responds to his own posts. I say HE because no female would waste so much of her time each day posting nonsense and making no difference in the world. Reach higher dude and get over yourself. EVERYONE is replaceable.

Post from TheLayoff.com

This post tells me that you are not on a engineering team and truly do not know what it takes to keep the environment up and running much of the criticism and critiques that happen on this form about optum is warranted and deserving, but this attack on the actual workers and saying that a small Hospital team or a small sys admin can do what is being done at optum is hyperbolic at best. You have no idea apparently what it takes to run an environment that supports easily 300,000 people daily, Optum processes more claims daily than Amazon send packages, the systems that process those claims are up and running because those in the optum technology business do what is necessary to ensure that others can do their job. Please get your thoughts together and try again.

Technology held together with wet spaghetti and scotch tape, basically, with smoke and mirrors to distract you from the fact that the product is on par with a 7th grade science fair project.
This place is amaaaaaaaaazing. Much completely avoidable flailing through a project barrier is treated as an accomplishment, rather than a hushed sort of embarrassment for the poor underprepared team who lacks the awareness to know they’re barely clearing the lowest bar. You die a little inside every time you see this. Literally any two hospital healthcare system in the rural US, with its tiny IT dept and jack of all trades sys admin could do the many of the things Optum brags of doing. Only they would do it better, because they wouldn’t clog project meetings with 20 superfluous attendees, and would actually gather requirements before breaking down prod (because unlike Optum, they actually care about the impact on patients and users).
This place blows my mind every day, in the worst way.

The problem is with Engineering management, the majority have little in the way of management dimensions! Most were mediocre technicians who were promoted by cronies and they fail to provide strategic leadership. Over the last 10-15yrs Optum has d-mbed down the need for technical expertise via an automation framework that they hope will save them labor costs. I laugh at Optum becoming Spacely Space Sprockets, there’s reaching back but possible because health insurance is a cash cow, Engineers whose skills have atrophied!

It's "Hello World". WORLD! Details matter in engineering son.

It's probably quite easy to appear amazing when the most experience the upper management has with AI is equal to "Hello Word". Oh look at this shiny new thing, lets dump all of our budget into it, even if the track record of using it has landed us in multiple lawsuits. I am waiting for the part of the scam where they ask them to pay them in giftcards....

I laugh when they say Optum is now an AI company. Like no. You asked a bunch of managers to change the title of some employees to AI Engineer without any training and then claim to have a ton of “AI Engineers”. This has to be the d-mbest company I have ever worked for.
