Thread regarding Optum layoffs

My Layoff Experience 10/17

I wanted to share a theory and get your thoughts on whether it makes sense. I’m a Business Analyst who was recently laid off on 10/17, and I had also been laid off back in March, but that layoff was later rescinded. After that, I was moved to a completely different team and organization under the reasoning that there was a “business need.” However, after joining the new team/org, I was repeatedly told that there was nothing for me to do and that they were “trying to find work” for myself and other BA’s who had been laid off and moved to this team. For months, we had no assignments or clear responsibilities.

Fast forward..Just had a “redeployment meeting and I was given a spreadsheet that listed open reqs within the clinical enterprise organization and I noticed that there were no BA positions listed, which confirms my suspicion that BAs are not typically utilized in the clinical space. This seems to support my theory that me and a couple of other BA’s (also, rescinded and laid off again) were used as placeholders to help a director (that I was reporting to after offer rescind) meet her quota of direct reports at the director level.
It seems likely that director knew she would be posting requisitions in a few months. In a recent org meeting, they shared that most of those requisitions had now been filled, with only a few remaining open. Now that the new hires are in place, the director has probably met the direct reports quota required of her. This could explain why we were let go and no longer needed to fill those vacancies temporarily.

Given the time it takes for requisitions to be approved and roles to be filled, it feels like we were just “there” until their hiring goals were met. This allowed them to avoid questions from HR about being a director with only 5-6 direct reports(which is how many direct reports they had prior to us joining her team)

This is Optum y’all, deception, poor resource management, manipulative, and misusing employees! I am disgusted.

A lot of the Business Analyst positions appear to have been moved offshore and the remaining positions are GL 25/26 and are not really Business Analyst in the traditional sense. They are more data analysts than business analysts.

The organization overall does seem to be moving away from the BA role in general. A lot of them were laid off over the last 18 months and very few if any were hired onshore. Sad, but true.

If I had any advice for you, keep looking, stay diligent. Maybe take some courses and look outside of the BA spectrum for some product owner or product manager roles.

As for your situation, it’s possible what you’re saying happened, but unlikely. More likely that they had cap space and had a green light to move someone in and thought a BA would be a good fit and many teams don’t really know what BAs do, so it may have sounded good at first but didn’t work out in the end.

Cost of layoff is what made you being played around ... Figuring the severance budget. Direct hire quote is important but not as much for your situation to play out

Agree 100%

"You got paid for those months to do nothing. What you should have done is use that time to find a job externally or train yourself with skills (online courses, certifications, etc.) that would help you land your next job with higher pay."

The government has banned non-competes. Don’t let that go over your head lol. I’m always two steps ahead. But it’s the principle! And your point is irrelevant. NEXT!

Ok, so you and others were being used to meet some directors quota (perhaps). But does it matter? You got paid for those months to do nothing. What you should have done is use that time to find a job externally or train yourself with skills (online courses, certifications, etc.) that would help you land your next job with higher pay.
Instead of thinking that the director used you, think of it as though the director did you guys a favor by giving you some extra time to sharpen up your skills, get 100% of the pay, and healthcare at the same time.
Be glad you don't live in a third world country where even after your families life savings goes into you studying at a college and after graduation the competition is so tough that you can't find a job. You go from one interview to the next but have no luck cause there are another 40% of college graduates that can't find a job along with you. You don't know where you'll be sleeping that evening or how you will get a meal to feed your stomach without a dime in your pocket. Life is a lot tougher outside of this beautiful country called USA. Even when you get paid to do nothing, people still complain that they are being used. Instead of using your brain to better you skills and looking for a job elsewhere.
