Meta Lays Off Employees Amid ‘Grubgate’

Meta recently terminated approximately two dozen employees—in what is being dubbed as "Grubgate"—for misusing a $25 Grubhub meal credit perk. The credits, intended for employees working late or at offices without cafeterias, were reportedly used to purchase non-food items, such as laundry detergent, wine glasses and acne pads, the Financial Times reported.

From what I know, these employees were warned, for multiple abuse of the system. There were others that did it, but not continuously, and told to stop so they didn't lose the job. There is a tax implication here, where the money/perk is supposed to be used for specific things. Much like WIC or other programs, you can only purchase from a specific list. So look beyond the first layer, they wouldn't have been fired if there wasn't a legal reason to. No i don't work for META, but I am a shareholder.

It's an example of setting employees up to be fired. Why not just have them submit for meal reimbursement? Or not do it at all? Of course employees would be tempted to use it on other things. They shouldn't be fired over it since they gave up a pizza for a nonfood item. What's the big deal? Fired for misuse of $25 they were entitled to?

This is why I don't have a Facebook account or anything relating to Meta (products or services). Meta gave the $25 card to employees to use. Who cares how they use it. This is so silly if makes me mad that I have to read such stupid stories about one of the biggest companies in USA. I hope shareholders start abandoning (selling) Meta shares. This company doesn't deserve it's market value worth. It may be worth billions, but it's brain is still so tiny and hasn't grown up.

What if the employees don't like food prepared by others, so instead of using it for food, they would rather use it for something else they could use instead of the letting the $25 go to waste. If Meta is letting go employees for such a ridiculous reason, then perhaps this is a blessing for the employees. They are all very well qualified they can find a job elsewhere or form their own consulting company to contract out their own services. Meta should be ashamed of itself for using this as an excuse to layoff employees. They should lay employees based on their work performance, not for silly things like this. Shame on Meta. Google and Amazon just gained a dozen talented employees from Meta's stupidity.
