Data Analyst and AI

Are we safe for now, or will AI be completely capable of replacing me after 20 years.
I am confident AI won't pick up the vital details. They won't scrub the data before it is presented. There is a lot to my job that is not very obvious. The problem solving. The communication to other colleagues etc. I'm just waiting for the meeting to be told bye bye. I will be in an ok position as in I will clear debts out of any severance pay. I'm getting a vibe from my manager that no one knows what I actually do. I'm working from home through no choice of my own.
If I try to do something new it could make my chances even more.
I feel today they could lay me off and I may have enough time to get a new job at 59.
Anyone in the same boat

Thank you all for your good advice. I am going to suggest to my boss if I can be taught AI. I understand a lot of it. I have learned very basic stuff.
I just know there will be issues without human intervention.
I know when the numbers are wrong. AI will just send the wrong info.
Unless they hire experienced data analyst who also are right up there with AI.
AI alone cannot do my job right.
There will be so many issues.
I think Dell can't see the whole picture. I have worked in every department from engineering to lab to god knows what. I have a great knowledge on where the problems lie. I know if people are messing with numbers. I love my job now. I do it to perfection.
Maybe I will study AI and figure out the pros and cons.
I really want to stay.
So many rumours going round it is very hard not to worry.
Unfortunately I am just a number and I feel my time is coming. I've seen people layed off who were the best of the best. I'm trying to look at it as a win win situation. If I go I will have money to tide me over until I find another job. I might even go back to college to unskilled. I can learn AI because it looks like we all will need to use it very soon

I'm looking forward to next ridiculous marketing buzzword. I think "AI" is getting stale and quite frankly misleading. The FTC should have told everyone that it's false advertisement if you say "AI" because there's really nothing that's artificially intelligent about AI. It's a single purpose algorithm. It has no feelings, no deductible skills, no reasoning, and no.... oh my god. I think I'm also describing the C-Suite... which means they also lack any sort of intelligence.

AI isn't going to take your job. Someone who knows how to use AI will. AI is a triage tool. It can help with analysis and pattern recognition but real data applications still require human intervention. RAG implementations are an indicator of that limitation. If you don't believe me use AI for some research on a topic. It can collate and summarize but you still need to vet sources and confirm the summary is correct and in context.

Do you believe Dell management understands how AI works and is looking to hire talented non coders who are more efficient because of their use of AI? Or do you think like I do that they’re just counting people as numbers and think AI will magically replace any of them that leave?

If you want a 20 year career, look at being a welder, plumber or electrician. Very secure and for most, a good income.

It is just a waiting game.
I have learned a little AI but I think I have barely scratched the surface on what I need to know. I will learn as much as I can. I just hope it is enough.
I am always expecting that Business Update meeting.
As for the rumours about October 31st has me wondering. Is it just a rumour.
I see people just disappearing from the headcount every week. I love what I do. I have experience in a lot of areas. My bosses are constantly changing so I'm just getting to know them and vice versa. Then they either announce they're gone on the day they leave.
Seems there is a constant trickle going on in the background of people just leaving (layoffs)
Everyone knows none of us are immune from this. It's like groundhog day

Go use that internal chatbot at Dell and learn about which LLMs are good at what and how to do prompt engineering. In the near future you will be typing like talking to a 5-8 year old to explain to the model what you want and it will do sql queries or the same on excel you upload and just create tables and charts and dashboards for you. Every possible tool or app is adding AI primarily in the form of a chat bot and power bi and tableau are no exceptions.

Start yesterday and learn because it’s fun and will make you marketable even if you don’t write code for the next job.

There is a saying that AI isn’t good enough to replace people yet but they are being replaced by people who use AI. That might be true elsewhere. But Dell is all smoke and mirrors and run by absolute id--ts who think AI is just magic and in any case they will continue laying people off and managing them out regardless of AI’s lack of capabilities because virtue signaling to investors is more important than reality. It is going to be a rude awakening when they realize AI can’t solve for a mountain of dirty data and docs. But nobody is willing to tell this to bosses who don’t want to hear no and are just itching to lay people off.

It's not that simple. My severance is keeping me there dut my age and if I leave I have nothing to fall back on while waiting to be employed.
House will nearly be paid which is huge. It's the rumours that are affecting me mentally. I'm the sole provider in my home because my wife is sick and I have a child with a disability. My wife wants to work but she is not physically able and she is losing her vision. Her job is to keep our son fed and loved. She is amazing. She gets him to do everything neurotypicals do.
He is nearly 18 now and he has surpassed his milestones. My wife is stubborn and that's her skill. She makes things happen

Guy, time to look for another company to work for. Dell will not value your experience. So go and start looking now and if something comes up jump.

I know there will be people saying to not leave without a package. But put your own well being ahead of a package and leave if you have the opportunity.
