Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Managers are consistently failing my team

My team is completely mismatched. We severely lack a couple of very specific skill sets and nobody gives a damn. None of us can focus properly on our work because there are gaps to be filled none of us are skilled for. We lose inordinate amounts of time doing the work someone else would do in a much shorter time because they are specialized. Mgmt has never been good in coordinating my team as they lack understanding of minutiae of the work and never cared to understand our skills and how they complement each other. Missing links are all the more glaring.

Senior management is mediocre at best, itself. They hire and promote in their own image. Carefully, so that those they promote don’t out-shine them. You repeat this pattern long enough, you end up with a leadership layer that’s devoid of any actual talent, a bunch of a$$ kissing brown-nosers who know the language but have not done anything real themselves.

Once upon a time new managers had extensive training on the skills needed to be a good people manager. It all stopped and managers now focus on managing up (i.e. accommodating their bosses) not on managing their direct reports. The good employees do the best they can regardless of office or remote, etc. The slackers coast regardless of where they are because there is no oversight by the boss. Then layoffs often target the experienced and best performing associates. It is a vicious cycle creating more mediocrity. Senior management is blind to all of it!

Upper Management are yes people and are afraid to fa-t without asking. We have 5 managers on my team, but only one with the title.

Sorry to be all doom and gloom but I’m hearing a lot of stories like this. Managers are just failing hard at fidelity across the board. Everyone’s focus appears to be on other objectives that don’t involve actual skill level

Sorry for your frustration. 1-on-1 with managers, sprint retrospective... seriously there're no proper avenues to vent your complaints?
