Thread regarding Amazon.com layoffs

21 Direct reports

I left Amazon after being overwhelmed with 21 direct reports, leading to burnout. I’m concerned about the impact of its decision to flatten the hierarchy.

Notice the reason, another manager went on maternity leave. Having had to pick up for employees on maternity leave or when they have issues with their children, which seems about all the time I can relate. These people are filling a position, and when they are not there the work often falls on their co-workers.

With 21 reports, just meet a different group of 4 each day for 20 minutes. For 21 reports that works out to 420 minutes or 7 hours of meetings per week (or one day of meetings). Maybe that's why Amazon is trying to flatten hierarchies.
