Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

Have your bosses acknowledged the toxic environment of constant looming layoffs? How are your teammates doing?

Has anyone's manager/business leader/boss/department head etc. acknowledged the toxic work atmosphere with constant looming layoffs, and how it might be affecting morale?

It’s been radio silence from our department head. Haven’t had an all-hands in months.

Other than a few general questions, I've avoided asking about/discussing layoffs with immediate colleagues, as I don’t want to be perceived as poisoning the team with negativity, but I’m just trying to be realistic. Boss doesn’t seem to have or is unable to share any information. I’ve pretty much been heads down, cranking out good quality work as usual. Wild how much labor they’re able to extract from us in this climate.

Some coworkers are borderline delusional, saying that there’s no way our group/team/department would get laid off, citing “vibes” and “so much work in the pipeline”. I really hope they’re right and I’m wrong. None of them seem very aware of the SkyDance deal, nor do they seem to read the news, even a little bit.

How are your teams doing? Do your coworkers seem aware of what’s going on? Do they care? Are they just not concerned?

A quick call/zoom lead by the department head would go a long way to at least make us feel less like resources and more like humans with families, rents and mortgages to pay, medical bills, etc.

My boss has been incredible supportive even with this dark cloud over our heads. They said that they, nor I, had any control of what the decision makers determine is best for the business. Have I "slacked off" a bit, sure. When dinner is on the table, I'm done for the day instead of getting back on the VPN to that little bit more on some project or jumping on something posted in Slack after hours.

Am I focusing solely on the flip of the coin that determines my fate on 9/24, no.

My butts in a chair at my desk doing the work that I need to get done. What I am not doing is going out of my way to find things to get involved in as I had been doing before the dark clouds of layoffs began.

I think we've opposite problem. We've been talking about so much and for so long now that team members are like whats the point. Nobody (leadership) giving any answers caz either they genuinely don't know or can't disclose for whatever reason.
I am a manager and have been very transparent with my team about upskilling themselves, updating their resume, applying for jobs since June. I even informed them that I will be willing to provide as many references as they need if they're impacted. I have been really proud of my team and I want to make sure that they're set up for success.

@oax+1uzvSAKu You sound like a leader that thinks of employees as HUMAN and not as resources, kudos to you . I hate it when ppl refer to me or coworkers as "resources". Coal, water, metals, gold are resources. WE are human. It is VERY telling that some managers keep assigning work, creating unnecessary meetings and constantly asking for status updates for the most minor of tasks , and in some cases have intensify these toxic antics leading right up to 9/24 with such insensitivity. I think fast food restaurants and factories treat their employees with more respect and dignity. In some cases such managers and even team leads are fearful of upper management and live to please and appease the powers that be only it seems. Many are just afraid of losing their work visa and think that by doing this it will somehow protect them on 9/24? Regardless of the reason, it makes for a very toxic, exhausting and unpleasant environment to work in

I've been talking about it with everyone who wants to. I seem to know more than my boss and leads. I reached out to the head of my department directly and had a 1:1. SVP and above are who know more. I don't get the people not talking about it or thinking it's all done and won't affect us. The more F'd up part is even if you make it through Sept, there's another phase before end of year and then when Skydance take over who knows what they'll do. Personally, I don't know if I want to stay or be laid off more? What's it going to be like after what sounds like a lot of people cut? Is the workload going to go down or are they going to dump it all on the few remaining?

I run a large team and I have been very transparent about September 24th. Of course, I cannot give specifics but I have been clear that reductions are coming. I have been telling people for 2 months to use the company's resources to help them find something new. If they needed any support or references from me, I would be more than willing to do it. Since I don't know if I will be around I wanted to ensure everyone felt supported. None of the actions are personal but the pep boys said we had to hit a target so we did. It's going to be one of the worst days ever and I don't even care about my job. I feel bad for the people on my team that have to leave.

It’s so annoying and every team should be openly talking about it more. I call it arrogance the act of acting as if they’re untouchable and will not be affected. I’m sure for many I work with this is only their first or second job in their life, so they’re totally oblivious. I guess a big life lesson is coming to them soon. Also I agree the constant threat of looming layoffs takes a toll on you. Can’t wait to get out of here either on Tuesday or voluntarily if I’m not one of those affected.

The team I had before mid August everyone thought there’s so much work in the pipeline - not us. Guess what has happened?.. 70% was let go from a well
operated and essential team only a few of us were left to deal with the biggest bloodbath ever. Those who keep their head in the sand will be awoke soon..

My team is fully self aware and we discuss it candidly almost everyday. My manager and even in my 1:1 with my VP have been very frank and sympathetic.

They have both been very critical of the way corporate has handled the layoffs and how the decisions were made.

Nope. It's the biggest elephant in a room I've ever seen. Delusional, or just plain ignorant, co workers keep chugging along like nothing is happening. Feels like my manager has ghosted the team. No meetings, emails, or slack messages. I'm almost certain I'll be notified next week that I'm going to be ejected. Trying not to dwell on it but will be happy to have this over in 6 days.
