Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Does the pay ever get adjusted here?

I'm in the bottom of my pay band despite being in my role for multiple years and being told I exceed my level. I've been checking around the market for a couple months now, and most companies are willing to pay 15-20% more with a remote work option. For the next job title up it's typically a 30-40% pay bump with a remote work option. I like my team and changing jobs in this job market is a bit risky. I think there's a very low chance I get laid-off in my current role as well. The workload is typically 40-50 hrs a week as well.

Is there any upside to staying at Medtronic? The only way I can think of getting more pay here is getting promoted but that's a random process and not in my control.

I think it's less work just to leave for a new job.

unfortuantely now the best way to advocate to get the raise you deserve if you are undepaid is go get a competing offer. then, take the competing offer. if you ask MDT to counter they may come up a little, but if you stay there will be an unoffiial mark that you were were willing to leave, so maybe you're not as loyal as we'd like... I 've witnessed many of those over the years.

A multi billion dollar company always has money. You need to be your own advocate and display your value not just to your manager, but to your director and above. If you are 100% competent in your role you should be at 93 - 107 of the middle of your pay band.

@gyik+1uzdEuhn, I'm in the same spot as OP. I got a 3 last fiscal year. My manager went to the director level to adjust the pay, but my manager was told there's no budget. There might be an adjustment at midyear but with hiring freezes I doubt that. It sounds like Medtronic is broke.

There are lazy managers and hard working managers. It sounds like either you’re underperforming and getting lip service or you have a lazy manager. Managers who advocate and plan for increases above and beyond the 2-3% annual get what they ask for for their good employees. There are opportunities to do off schedule market increases and midyear increases.

A coworker of mine was in a similar situation and I suggested that he go talk to HR - his pay was immediately increased probably over $5k-$7k as he'd been at the bottom of his pay band

It would take a lot of efforts to receive a 15 - 25% raise from MDT. If you an offer with that increase + remote work option, go for it if all other things (i.e., work, people, company growth, work life balance, job stability, commute, benefits, etc. are equal.

I left there a couple years ago for a 35% increase for the same title at a much smaller company - MDT made a counteroffer to stay but could only offer up a 10% increase. They can increase, you just need to push hard for it.

BTW - no regrets from leaving, so much farther ahead in retirement goals with just a couple years of that added comp... I'd move on, still have friends there that I talk to and they all sound miserable to be still employed there

Raises come from staff cuts.

Your manager can nominate you for salary adjustment. It is possible.

Yes in 2022 when the job market was hot and companies were competing for talent. Even that one was under 10%, 2-3% is typical without a promotion. If OP is getting offers for 20-30% more, leaving is the best option. It would take a miracle to get that matched.

Ask for a market adjustment raise

You sound like a whiny, pissy lil baby type employee. If you’re in this position after “years” in your job, the problem lies with you.

Sure, the pay gets adjusted once per year at 2%. Beyond that you need to either walk on water or get promoted

honestly your only real opportunity for a market fair bump is to change roles, or have HR determine youre dramatically underpaid and force mgmt to adjust. however they are more concerned about female and POC pay disparity.

@bmw+1uzdEuhn, OP here, management has agreed that I'm underpaid, but there's no money for raises. I asked if I'm going to be stuck at my pay level forever, and I got reply they don't know. It sounds like Medtronic is going back to extreme cost savings mode again, so I highly doubt my compensation will ever change here.

Yes. I’ve gotten adjustments over the years. Maybe some OUs and departments are better about it. Have you talked with your manager about this?
