It happens to keep the spans and layers. If you can't get 14 direct reports you are moved to IC role.
At the Sr Dir level the average across all the Sr Dir managers needs to be 14. Example one manager could have 17 and another could have 11. The average across the managers reporting to Sr. Dir is 14. The other option is more shuffling will occur in the near future to balance teams out.
Yes i know of 3 managers that had to change their title to IC due to span and layers. But it seems not all departments are adhering to the min number of direct reports and still have their Manager title. Bit unfair
For some reason Marketing and Product Management always have gotten away with having far, far fewer
My manager has less than half the 14. Not sure how it’s possible she’s still a manager.
Perhaps they could become a Scrum Master...
How can a manager of a tech team become an IC if they have no tech knowledge
My manager has much less than 14 reports and is still a manager
""How many reports does a manager need""
The guidance is 14 directs for managers. That doesn't apply to VP and higher though.

It’s a way of protecting people and complying with the S&L’s rules. Don’t complain, just do it and keep your head down.
Yes, know a few due span and layers adjustments (min. no. of direct reports)
