Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Pregnant and got LRed

I just told my team I am pregnant few weeks ago and now I have a 1:1 with my manager tomorrow for the LR. Is this even legal, what should I do? I am so stressed out and my health insurance will be lost.

I would recommend you plan to keep /fund Cobra after you are separated for the company, Obamacare su-ks and no decent doctors take it nor can you get appointments with a provider easily. It is not cheap but it will be worth it until you have the baby and right after. You get access to it for 18 months. I kept my cobra for 15 months and took care of all medical procedures for my kids and I that we had been putting off.

You can file a discrimination case against Cisco on the grounds that the employer knows about your pregnancy. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1978 prohibits the discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. This law provides protection to Pregnant women from termination of employment. You can even check with your state law . I am sure every state has protection. You can apply both laws and serve a notice.

Yes its legal, pregnancy is not a protected class, nor should it be.

Pregnancy is a protected class. That simply means you cannot discriminate a person because they're pregnant. Pregnancy cannot be the reason you lay someone off, but you can lay off someone who is pregnant. The question here would be the timing of when OP notified, and I'd their manager had made any negative comments about Pregnancy or working mother's.

Good luck OP. Sorry you're going through this.

Not trying to be rude, but why would anyone think this is illegal?

OP Ignore the rude replies below i guess some people lost their compassion , you say 1 on 1 tomorrow are you sure its for layoff did you check with your manager, curious because most of the notifications are done in US today. I think Cisco provide Cobra atleast for 4 months which should cover you for a short while, not sure on your husbands job situation can't he cover you? Market will improve in 2025 once the Fed rates comes down which it will and you will be in a much better position to land a job.

If you are a single mother of young children or pregnant, the Affordable Care Act (e.g., "Obamacare") will cover you. "Maternity care is one of the ten essential health benefits that must be included on all new individual and small group policies."

Also, if your income is zero or below the Federal poverty level (FPL) level, your insurance costs will be covered. You will also qualify for other financial assistance.

Even in the worst case scenario you will be fine.

Take a break, relax and focus on your health and baby.
In tech jobs the stress is always there. Take this opportunity to enjoy time with family
Btw, whoever is responsible for the pregnancy should worry about the medical and other issues

Make it a HR problem they wont fire you.. I have seen someone do that and she managed another 4 years… they found her a token role in CX.

It's only illegal if you can prove they targeted you for being pregnant, which would be very difficult to do.

We have an old wisdom, don't tell your pregnancy until full 6 months.
Our LR is simple based on how "expensive" you are. Just like those old folks, you cost more than others. However age can not hide please show empathy in the future for your older peers.

It is legal in the U.S. I've seen it happen way to often. It will also be difficult to land a new job if you are showing, much less keep a new job as they can fire you for taking any kind of leave before you have been employed a full year. It su-ks. Hopefully you will get a severance and some help with medical insurance beyond just COBRA. Be sure to apply for unemployment and check what options you have under medicaid.

I guess you are in the US? If you are in the UK, or pretty much anywhere else in Europe, there are strict rules about LR and pregnancy. In some cases, employers will have to meet maternity rights even after LR.

Many of the comments here are from rude and disrespectful people. Please ignore them and look after yourself. Stay strong.

Come on folks, you can answer a simple question without being disrespectful to the OP. You don’t have to be mean about it.

Are you serious with this question? Being pregnant doesn’t afford you any rights over anyone else. Furthermore the lists were done weeks ago, likely before you shared you’re pregnant.
Does the timing su-k? It sure does. Are 7% of the Cisco employees world-wide in the same situation? Yes.

I would highly doubt you were put on the LR list due to pregnancy.

Regarding the comment below around not being able to be LR’ed while on maternity leave - you can be, as well as when out on FLMA. I googled it. Why? Because I was wondering if the most toxic person I’ve ever encountered during my 30ish years of having various jobs could be LR’ed while on maternity leave. She can.

Honestly do you believe you have more rights to not be laid off because you’re pregnant? What about the person sitting next to you who may be supporting his or her family? I can’t stand entitled children.

Are you sure the 1:1 meeting is for the LR ?

That is a terrible situation to be in. Call the EAP number that they will share with you. They will help you work through that. You are going to have medical insurance coverage for the next 6 months paid by Cisco. Maybe there is a way to extend that until your child is born. Good Luck!!!!

If you were on maternity leave then they could not LR you till your leave ends. If you're in Texas, you're totally sc--wed if you know what I mean. The baby daddy needs to step up now.
