Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Internal role?

Curious if anyone from previous LR landed a role internally and how realistic this is?

This time is different. Coming from someone who hires the people here. Not to bring in bad news, but the truth is there are very few openings this time around compared to the last few LRs.

I got an internal role after being laid off in the 2020 rounds. Moved from Sales to Post-Sales. What's the worst they can say? Do it.

If you got an internal role, would you really want it? It would only be a matter of time before you’re laid off again.

I was impacted in Feb after more than a decade of dodging layoffs at Cisco. Reqs that had previously been frozen opened up the day after notices went out and I immediately started applying for roles that made sense.

I had Cisco recruiters responding by the following week, had initial interviews setup the week after that and started my new role 5 weeks and a couple days after notification that my old role had been eliminated.

I ended up in a much better role, and actually got the salary increase I'd been denied for years.

YMMV of course and is highly dependent on where the business is going, your skillset and experience, and how those things align.

But it is very plausible.

More than 90% Internal roles in Cisco is BS, scam and nepotism
I have seen people who were in previous LRs got internal jobs and now have become directors :) with their network or nepotism
Hiring managers orchestrated the interviews just for to be compliant

The director that laid me off said he would help, and did absolutely nothing even after a nice reminder. Once you get hit by the LR, people all around Cisco ghost you, remove you from spaces, and generally try to avoid you. It's sad culture.

I was impacted Dec 2022 and found an internal role. Another friend of mine was impacted in an LR before that and found another internal role.

So it happens.

But for every one of us that found a role, there are 20 others that did not. Good luck.

I did in the layoffs a couple years ago. One other from my group did as well.

Impacted July 2023 and found an internal role. I almost wish I hadn’t, but given the external market right now, it’s probably for the best. I’m just happy to be employed right now, but I absolutely hate the org I’m in now. Do your research about the org, reach out to the people in it, don’t just buy the story the hiring manager tells you. Research the same as if you were researching an external company.

I landed another role internally after being LR'ed 5 or 6 years ago. Ended up declining the role and took something outside Cisco. Best decision ever. The Cisco role evaporated in the next LR round. Now back at Cisco via acquisition. If I get hit again I won't look internally.

I did last LR in Feb, but the VP set up job reqs for the newly restructured org and told us the same day as notification that we'd be prioritized for rehire.

Honestly this is a huge downturn for the company. I wouldn’t advise looking internally tbh. Plus, personally, I’ll be so glad to be out of this brutal 6 month layoff cycle.

Best of luck to you.
