I think @2uzi is correct when she/he says that were invited to bid just to create some levarage to Sony so they can pressure AMD on pricing and contract terms. I think Sony already knew it'll never be us.
Intel was never a serious contender to win the design... it was just Sony stringing Intel along so they could get better pricing from AMD. First off, Intel GPU is still far far behind AMD, and to get comparable to AMD, the product die size would be huge, and extremely power hungry. Second, switching to Intel would require huge validation resources, not just on the OS, but both backwards and forward games SW.... plus game developers would have to have parallel game development (one for current gen consoles, and one for past gen consoles). Some of this effort could be saved if Sony is going 100% online, but I doubt that'll happen as to many gamers have extensive disc libraries.
This is DCAI lost opportunity, but they saved the R&D cost.
Wintel doesn't fab any Entertainment / Gaming chips !
Nor auto industry ECUS !
Way beneath them !
Hey Pat, can you explain how you lost a $30B deal with Sony? It's time for you, with mixed emotions, to announce your decision to retire.
This one is 100% on Pat. He became CEO a year before this decision was made. I’m surprised he hasn’t been fired but I’m more surprised they think he can make improvements. Christ Pat!
Who made these decisions man? Why is Intel so arrogant and short sighted. These id--ts keep rejecting so called "low margin" businesses in hopes of bagging a homerun high margin business
We are so fn good at business! We really know what we are doing! Our joke reputation outside is unwarranted
Some issues happen with TSMC and you can skip the PS6 and buy a PS7 on Intel 12A in 2033
Intel has passed on every console cpu opportunity after the original Xbox based on margins (source : was involved) - it was an economic decision at the time based on what products can make most margins in our fabs … at that time of course , this foundry concept was embryonic. It’s greed and naive … amd are happy to take much lower margins as its material to their top line , and helps them get more capacity at TSMC… which supports negotiations for the rest of their products - its business 101
Intel was and remains arrogant , and thinks it can dictate to markets (oh how the tide has changed)
There are many many many stories like this btw
The incompetence is unbelievable.
