“ the Biden Administration supports unions benefiting from CHIPS Act subsidies, semiconductor manufacturers in the US have not yet reached beneficial agreements in their negotiations with those unions.”

Back in the day when I was an FSE, the absolute worst shops to install in were union shops (circuit board assembly/automotive). Nothing but a bunch of lazy individuals who needed a 2hr coffee break before coming in to flip a circuit breaker or turn a valve. It took 5hrs to do a 30 minute job because of them and their egos. If you want to accelerate Intel's demise, go union.

Basically, if your product can be made in foreign countries, having a union will guarantee that your employer will either move off shore or go bankrupt. Just look at areas where unions are prospering in America: teachers, nurses, restaurant workers, police, government employees. Their services can't be outsourced.

Intel with a chip workers union would still have to compete against TSMC. It's like going for a fist fight against Mike Tyson.

@ubt

Oh, yeah, the old "we'll get it right this time" argument.
It will never be a utopia that it promises to be. Everything goes great until someone gets greedy, government steps in to fix it, they get greedy and the circle repeats itself.

In theory, many things sound great - in practice, most are cr-p.

If they will guarantee I can’t be fired then yes let’s do it. I would even be willing to pay “dues” for that job stability

“ Unions have outlived their usefulness. Today they're corrupt communist like organizations”

This might generally be true in practice for unions, just like communist countries do not meet the ideal, but the theory is still sound so there’s room for improvement in implementation.

Alternatively, engineer certification, licensing, and professional member organizations might represent a different form of collective influence able to affect runaway business practices.

Unions have outlived their usefulness. Today they're corrupt communist like organizations that make union leaders rich off worker dues and teach workers to hate their company. Union made products are less competitive & have less quality than non-union products. Ever wonder why the fat construction workers who can barely walk and male teachers who wear dresses to class and teach the kids that their parents are racist, keep their jobs? Unions. If you think Intel has a lot of layoffs now, wait until they're unionized. And while you're filing for unemployment, the fat do-nothing dreg with seniority will still be collecting a check. All while the union bosses are still collecting their checks. But by all means, go ahead and unionize Intel and ki-l any chance of being competitive they MIGHT still have. LOL, the US military equiped with union made chips in a fight with Russia, China, Iran, etc. would be interesting to watch.

Just because somebody has an intelligent and rational thought about the worthlessness of unions doesn't mean that we're in HR. It's just intelligence. I know the facts and do unions not going to help any of us.

I worry it is a bit too late to consider unionizing tech in the United States given that the prevailing wisdom would be to have the work done elsewhere to counter any such attempt.

Then again, there’s an ongoing backlash against globalization, with some politicians embracing nationalism. Still, those same politicians are probably the same ones who are out to eliminate unions.

wisdom - a very debatable word here given security/privacy issues and the variation in quality of work

Unions aren't free. They don't make sense in the case of Intel either. Unions can have value when the management isn't sharing profits with the employees but in this case there are no profits. Unions have no influence over decisions made by management. They just collectively bargain for compensation for employees.
