Digital Layoffs X adidas Running/Runtastic

adidas Plans to Close adidas Running/Runtastic Starting Monday

Key Facts:

  • All employees are required to report to the office in either Vienna or Pasching on Monday, September 16th, at 9:30 a.m.
  • The planned rebranding to "Adidas International Digital Sports GmbH," initially set for April 1st, has been postponed indefinitely.

Rumours and Speculations:

  • The newly established works council held a meeting with the Runtastic CEO on Thursday, where confidentiality agreements (NDAs) were involved.
  • Numerous employees, from managers to team members, have been asked to sign NDAs recently.
  • A significant restructuring of the digital division has been announced.
  • A phased approach to shutting down operations is expected, which may take place over several months.

Estimates suggest a 70-80% likelihood of closure beginning Monday, with a complete settlement expected by September 2025.

Runtastic was honestly DOA and shouldn’t have even been bought. Strava etc have been dominating — Runtastic was dying no matter what. The only issue is that adidas was d-mb enough to buy it.

Finally someone grew the ba--s to do something. afidas will loose a lot of good people also now. Not sure how they intend to recover from there.

And Runtastic was so good at product development that adidas got jealous and shut them down. I see.

"the Adidas way of doing things" simply doesn't work in the digital world. slowness, bureaucracy, incompetence. look at the webshop and tell me honestly if it is worthy of a company of this caliber? I have not seen any rebellion, as previously said many talents have abandoned precisely because of this flattening to Adidas policies made of continuous fade outs.

Even after the “full” integration into adidas the management decided to be rebel. Don’t start doing things the adidas way. Do things in their own way. Be special. Well, congrats. Now you are the special ones who closed a company and put 170 people out of job. I hope you all sleep well at night.

There are still many talented individuals, outnumbered but many incompetent leaders. Don’t blame the employees putting their all into their work, being led by an absent CEO, and group of VP’s who have no idea what they are doing.

Fully agree with what @1slb+1uvv1NMY said! To add to it, post the layoff in 2023, the incompetent management made sure to get rid of even more talented people trying to question them and change things, and instead promoted people who’d never challenge them, to ensure that their positions are safe. I can easily say that most of the good talent already left the place and it’s since been filled with extremely incompetent leaders, their puppets, and people who couldn’t find another job. It is extremely sad to see what could have been a great product destroyed this way.

for at least 2 years the situation at Runtastic had been getting worse, all signs pointed to the complete irrelevance of the app for Adidas. after the first layoffs (2023) the situation got even more complicated, with a management incapable of giving direction to the product. adidas' "corporate" mentality and way of doing things gave the final blow. the only wise thing would have been to sell the app to someone competent or to make Runtastic independent again. unfortunately big corporations are not known for wisdom and common sense.

I love how the management claimed that they would never abbreviate it like that… obviously none of them have been on the Internet
