Fordham was the beginning of the end for me during my time there. I didn't work on Fordham but it was the one partnership that seemed to disintegrate into an unsalvageable mess. Having worked at 2U on a pretty well oiled machine of a partner, I was shocked with how much chaos there was at Fordham. At one point SSAs weren't allowed to speak to the students...like...what's the point in having an SSA if you can't speak to the students?

it just didn't seem like they had any answers, and it scared me because if one partnership could go bad that quickly, what could happen to others and what is happening to others?

During my tenure in placement and with Fordham, I observed several challenges that impacted our collaboration. While the article contains truths, some of these truths are misleading. Fordham has been a challenging partner due to frequent policy changes, approving replacements without substantial justification, missing meetings with 2U leadership, experiencing high turnover, and being slow to respond to requests and approvals that would move students through the placement pipeline. These actions significantly hinder the placement team's ability to function effectively and meet their OTP pacing.

However, it is important to note that 2U also bears responsibility. The company failed to hold Fordham accountable for its actions. Additionally, working under certain placement leadership has been difficult, the workload for this program is unmanageable within a standard 9-5 schedule, and the team was understaffed. Leadership provided minimal support to placement specialists in these regards and the majority of this specific team has left the company or requested a move to a different team.

In conclusion, both parties are at fault. Given the extensive work 2U placement team has done for Fordham, it is unclear how Fordham will manage this workload internally. They do not have the staffing nor the technology to do so at this time.

Do you have specific examples or proof that you worked there? You're making broad statements that favor a public complaint against a company, claim to know both sides, yet offer no concrete evidence of having worked at either. Either trying to stir up trouble or someone at 2U just trying to cling to the claims of negligence (specifically to placement processing) at Fordman.

Having personally worked on Fordham placement back in the early days I can confirm that a lot of blame lies with Fordham as well. 2Us process certainly has its faults and metric requirements are different from school priorities and that can clash, but Fordham was completely negligent in fulfilling their role in the placement process. There was significant staffing turnover and therefore placements went unapproved for months at a time. At one point they refused to let student success reach out to students!! And the quality of the students they admitted was rough - it really felt like a cash grab on both sides. Clearly a lot wrong with Fordham internally and I feel really bad for their students.

This is tough because I know the majority of placement specialists work VERY hard and outcomes are strong overall. However, the incentives to modernize the approach outside of cold calling seem to be missing. It also seems like students get the luck of the draw with who they are assigned to. It’s hard to encourage students in our student success role when you have more visibility into the process. Maybe it depends on the program but I wish I could say I fully believed in the placements process.
