These layoffs have been good for nothing but becoming a catalyst to show that this company has always been full of favoritism, nepotism, culture of fear and arrogance at the top. Veterans know this. Newbies are getting to know, and I assume will come not to regret if they end up being laid off.

You left out the 2 top & most obvious reasons - politics... Layoff choices are mainly 2 reasons:
- company reduces risk by laying off complainers who did or were planning / threatening to make complaints via union, state/local authorities or law firms for harassment or discrimination etc.
- laying off non-protected persons (white, white male etc.) in order to raise percentage of minorities, females, lgbtq etc. of previously existing staff ( basically diluting white & white male numbers in the company ) it's a numbers game dude
As a well-seasoned veteran, I can say that this company and its divisions have a long history of ruling through intimidation. I worked under past supervisors who enjoyed hearing employees whom they were firing, begging, crying, and groveling to keep their jobs. They enjoyed incubating a hostile work environment that left you wondering on a Friday whether you were going to have a job the following Monday. Somewhere along the line, the seed of sadism was planted in the company and it never left. It's hard to explain without writing a doctoral dissertation. The things I know would make your skin crawl. I hope to be collecting severance pay, soon.
Everyone should just stop working. Miss deadlines, cover for each other, hide work.
Yeah, a more “conservative” approach would be preferring merit and quality over nepotism and identity.
Progress is a neutral term.
