Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Break the norm. Many companies want you to sacrifice your time and health in order to progress.

If your manager thinks like this, then its time to move on.

Sometimes you dont have a choice. an example is your manager forcing you to book a meeting with Shanghai team to get synced up with your task. If you deny that, you are just setting yourself up for failure since you are not able to move forward with your work. Sometimes its needed because if you try to get messages across in email and there was a misunderstanding, you lose a day waiting to get the misunderstanding sorted. One day less on the sprint cycle to complete your task, thats a big deal

@1wcv+1ur0bqBS - - -Good for you. I’m glad that things worked out for you. Since you are in a sweet spot and have never put in those extra long hours, that means that no one else does either, its completely impossible.

I have had two promotions at Citi but can count on one hand how many times I worked even a minute late. I even worked in a team where people seemed to work hours late.

Organisation and delivery is key.

I don't care if you work late, that's your choice.

I now manage a large team and I lead by example. As long as you are delivering then time keepers don't matter.

the loop hole is non fix hours, that really allows for the abuse to happen.

Also having most of the outsourced work to Shanghai, it leads the american team to work similar to the work culture overseas. Have you heard or 996? 9am - 9pm 6 days a week. This happens a lot overseas and the culture is also very strict and hard working compared to American workers. in order to keep up with overseas team, Americans have to work the same crazy hours, especially if the majority of the team is overseas

Glamorizing overly long hours has become a trend now. Its like the only way to prove you’re a heavy hitter.

All of it summarized at the end of the year with “ you did great but I can’t give you anything for it, by the way rejoice that Jane got yet another raise.”

Its not just Citibank, even if you manage to leave, its just as stressful somewhere else where 40 hours would be the minimum hours needed for the job. The finance industry is very stressful with long hours. I think the salvation can be changing to anything else but fintech or finance. I hear peers having more healthier work life balance working anything else that non banking. Unlimited pto, one day pto free a month at no cost, better benefits that Citi offers and team building events. Even if the individual does not attend, its nice for a company to invest in their employees to attend a planned event.

Citi is lacking a majority of what I listed. The benefits they give employees is barebones. That eventually takes a toll on the employee that is working 50 hours average a week and no time for themselves.
