What is really going on with Intel’s 18a process?
Analysis: Problems said to abound but are they technical?
Sep 9, 2024 by Charlie Demerjian
Intel is in deep trouble, the 18a process is broken, and it is all down hill from here, right? SemiAccurate dug deeply into the 18a rumors for the last 3+ weeks and hunted them all down.

As you may recall, SemiAccurate was the first, and for years only site that was screaming about Intel’s 10nm problems, with data. Only after it became undeniable did other climb on board. SemiAccurate also called Intel’s potential for outright failure in 2019, again long before anyone else did. We have a long track record of calling Intel’s problems and their successes because we do the groundwork and research rather than parroting back random id--ts on the net.

With that in mind, let us tell you what we found out about the 18a rumors that are swirling around of late. The first rumor is that 18a is significantly delayed, more than a year. Next up is that the yields, to use a term of art, su-k. They go on to various versions of performance problems for those parts that do yield. ‘Because’ of all this, companies like Broadcom are publicly trashing Intel up and down.

Then there is the flood of executive exoduses (exodi?) that have been well publicized. Throw in slashed budgets, cut dividends, plagues of emus, stock delisting ‘leak’ rumors, and more just for fun. It is all real, all pointing to a failing company with no chance of anything, right?

Nope. Other than the dividends, budget cuts, and executive departures, weeks of hunting this all down ended up shooting it all down. SemiAccurate is not a financial publication so we won’t talk about the dividends or budget issues, there are far more competent people out there that do so, but we will talk about the rest. What did we find, and why are we so sure of our conclusions? And why are we so sure we know why all this is happening now? Believe it or not even with all this smoke there is actually a fire but it probably isn’t what you think.
