Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Final Summer Departures Count: 220

July had the most layoffs. I wonder if this affects the engagement survey.

In U.S. there are 35 CMs and 15 DPMs left. I think in summer 2023, there were about 70+ CMs

They're laying people off as we speak. Just check out the internal departure site.

If you think the layoffs are over, you are horribly naive. Are most of them over? Sure, but they are most definitely not ALL over. In a First Friday someone asked explicitly if we are done with layoffs and there was some vague comments about continuing to streamline, refine, etc. They won't commit to saying the layoffs are over, so that should tell you everything you need to know.

Well, I for one, I’m glad the layoffs are over so I can focus on the tasks ahead.

I recently came across a Reddit community called F-ckCengage. It's a place where customers share their complaints. They don't seem happy.

I have been told a few times now the few CMs left in the US (who work largely in STEM subjects) will probably be laid off by January. There are concerns there needs to be a US-based content management role of some sort, to give oversight and direction, but they haven't "refined" what that will be yet.

They are still looking hard at all of content to farm out as much material as possible to either CPI or vendors. Poor performance from either of those is being glossed over. Expectations of them are being rolled back so they can be labeled a success.

Across the board different roles are being told the quality doesn't actually matter that much. We can except cheaper, substandard product because the customers won't notice anyway. They are banking on it.

Exactly. They do act like cult leaders. I'm so sick of their lies. Sending work to India wasn't about "centralizing support across Cengage Group." They moved work to India and left some team members in the US. This doesn't align with centralizing work or making operations efficient; it's the complete opposite. Do they really think we're that stupid? I would honestly have more respect for them if they just told the truth and said, "The private equity firm that invested in us is pressuring us to reduce costs, so we're moving work offshore. It su-ks, and I'm sorry." Also, they said the same thing about Horizon being over months ago and then proceeded to lay off more people. This is not the end of it. It never is.

Straight from the cult leaders: "Horizon was a project to define our new operating model, where we integrated teams doing similar work to scale centralized support across Cengage Group. Examples are Product Technology & Innovation, Research, Customer Support, Content Production; additional opportunities to create scaled central teams will continue to be evaluated.

The work to define our new operating model and associated headcount reductions are complete. We will continue to make changes to refine and operationalize; our company will continue to evolve as our business evolves. This can entail further role changes and headcount reductions, however not on the scale of Horizon."
