I’m at age when I expect to be kicked to the curb, but not anywhere near retirement yet. I still have debt to service and dependents, and I’m not secured for the future in the case I lose the job. My age also doesn't make me easily employable, especially in the current job market. I’ve been through layoffs, cuts, reorgs, all kinds of scare, and never dreaded the possibility of losing my job this much. The fact that there are weeks, maybe two months, of anticipation doesn’t help at all. Before anyone gives me advice like “look for another job”, you honestly think that I haven’t? That’s what triggered all the anxiety.

Walmart was a job that was for times when you need to work temporarily... But now the id--ts have turned it into a full time career and asking for over the top wages, so this is the result of what you get ... Robots doing the job for less.
Same boat! And now our standard go to job “Walmart greeter” doesn’t exist anymore and customers are even expected to scan and bag their own purchases. Something is going to have to change at a societal level at this point….
Same boat, reached deep to be soul and forced myself to bust a move/ revamp the resume. This place has no scruples, no ethics, employees and patients are commodities -am not expecting next job to be ideal either. But still need to fly, stay resilient. Working in healthcare since the late 80’s… not impressed with what’s going on.
The job market is brutal out there. I was laid off and in my early 50’s. Good luck and learn how to use AI to your benefit when applying for jobs.
This place is woke. Just identify as a 25 year old. Problem solved.
Ageism is illegal and yes UHG/OPTUM are guilty! They slowly got rid of older workers in my group they didn’t like and finally got around to me. I saw with my own eyes their positions and work being moved to an India staff group. I wish this company wasn’t too big to fail, they are evil and hopefully someday they will simply be a hosting service for a government run single payer healthcare system. That way they can’t offshore high paying jobs to India and elsewhere and basically sh-t on our country!
Age and higher salary definite issue my boss even talks about people making more than others
I have a copy of an old layoff roster that took place in March 2023…… and wowzers is age discrimination obvious as a MF.
Definitely there is strong age discrimination going on.
I feel 60% of my co-workers are waiting on "The Golden Ticket", doing the minimum. The other 40% are getting all tied up in knots worrying. What an unhealthy culture. Acquisitions favor a select few.
I want you to know you are not alone. I am tired and have worked my entire life. Because I have moved frequently and it always seemed like it was at the worst time, my savings is not where it should be for retirement. If I lose my job now I would be soooo sc--wed. I too am older, have way to many financial obligations and have I mentioned I am tired. I do not want to start over learning a new job, building up perks like vacay time. The thought of building my resume again makes me cringe not to mention the shear panic of having to interview and having to compete against individuals 1/3 of my age. I do have education and experience going for me, but my job here is specialized. I have faith that everything will be okay, because I believe in God's promise, but I still stress and worry. Hang in there we will be okay.
I agree 100% and am in the same boat, have been looking since layoff on 4/18..not an easy market for some of us. I had made a previous post just looking for any intel people may have NOT advice....
