Verizon nearing deal for Frontier Communications, WSJ reports

Reuters) -Verizon is in advanced talks to acquire Frontier Communications in a deal that would boost its fiber network and help it compete with rivals including AT&T, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

An announcement could come this week if the deal talks do not hit any last-minute snags, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report did not provide details about the deal value, but Frontier was valued at nearly $7 billion as of last close.

Both Verizon and Frontier did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Frontier's shares were up 34% after the report, while Verizon's shares fell more than 3%.

I would not come back to work for Verizon , especially Frontier. Couldn’t pay me enough. Glad I retired early. Couldn’t handle all the new Dei and the Mexican and Italian illegal aliens . They all wanted what I had for 35 years. Good riddance.
lol😝

Well as a Gte to and including Frontier employee,I can tell you we ran off of our regional $$ and not Cali or Tx $$.

Not to be rude but you have no understanding of the profitability of the company then or now. Without the anchors. None of the other states really mattered. The anchor for GTE was always California, Texas has always been a break even and Florida has always been a loss. The other states in the footprint were inconsequential and really still are. Perhaps you’re not aware that when Verizon’s original plan was to sell all they did to FTR without California. Anyway, you look at this. California is where the money comes from for this company. So realistically if you want to talk about handouts or people being carried. Whatever region you are in doing copper. You’re like the welfare baby of the companies California business.

For those that dont know. California has always been the cash cow that supports the rest of the footprint. This has been the case since the days of GTE. Nothing to do with politics or how you feel about California. Just the way it is. So based on that. Why do you think they spend money in California and not wherever it is you are.

I think Jim meant to say why is Frontier spending money on fiber in our state (California) when people are leaving to his.

If your d-mb enough to pay that much for rent in Commifornia please stay there. Which questions the fact, why is FTR when people are leaving and moving to where us rednecks live ?

It's funny seeing all these rednecks and hillbil--es complaining about California when they wouldn't even be able to afford the rent for a one bedroom apartment over here.

Oh so true. No one cares about California. Waste pit of the USA. Good for you with all that new fiber. High speed internet free to all the illegals costing the rest of Frontier their fair share of the profits. You will be replaced by illegals, just wait. Keep them ,we value our jobs copper or fiber here in Wisconsin.

Don't give rats a$$ about commiformia. Real America still has alot copper. So I frickin know what I'm talking about. Alot of Ftr dollars over the years went to commiforia because of your PUC. While rest of suffered with existing paper cable.

Little talk about this deal from telco analysts. Thoughts?

I think VZ should be required to pay back tax payers who bailed out Frontier.

Rumor has it Verizon will be running a sophisticated background check in 2025-2026. Apparently in California a bunch of new hires in the 2015&2022 hiring event slipped through the cracks with felonies. Verizon will have to let all the techs with prior convictions go! Wow!😮

Well several grevences are being filed because contractors are doing fiber splicing and installs and current Ftr techs are being denyed training.
They are being told that's the way it is. Love it or leave it.

Again, don’t know what you’re talking about. FTR techs receive all their “training” via online. It’s force fed to them weekly. You must be in some podunk part of the country. Copper barely exists in the majority of California. Copper is being pulled out of conduits to place fiber. No FTR employee in So Cal is copper. Fibers been the name of the game for the last 15 years. If anyone is still doing copper and they get layed off. Blame yourself and the Union. The union fought every contract to “KEEP” copper BAU for employees.
UNION STRONG. LMAO

So the techs working for Ftr right now are still working copper. As they add fiber , contractors get those installs. Talk about getting kicked in the nuts for you dedication.
Fellow techs watch for a possible buy out and come back contracting. F the union loyalty

Clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about for the first part. As far as buyouts.
Again, don’t know what you’re talking about. OSP is already under their staffing number required by the PUC to operate. Just as when we were bought before the PUC requires that number to be met. And no contractors don’t count. I wish they did. I’d happily take a buyout in a minute to get away from this sh-tshow.

Well Baca. Most of the better supv. got tapped on the shoulder in November of 2016 . My old boss was one . Ftr kept the good d#$k su-kers and back stabbers like this Joe Muia people keep posting about. He was my boss at the time He's short so he fit under his bosses desk. From what I hear VZ don't put up with that cr-p.

I’m laughing at all of you mo--ns that took a buyout or early retirement. I’ve been a supervisor at GTE/Verizon/Frontier for almost 30 years. I told people that worked for me don’t panic and jump ship, but they still left. Now the rest of us that stayed are about to make some money with Verizon again. I just hope Verizon gets rid of the rest of these worthless techs and we go with vendors. The techs are as stupid as they are lazy.

Do you think Frontier’s management employees will still get a bonus in Q1 2025 now?

They are planning to give low retention bonuses to IT, corporate accounting and finance teams to stay and work on the merger then let go of most of them..

I’m a call center director in Florida, but I won’t say which city. This deal will happen and I have been a small part of the negotiations. The biggest road block was how much DEI would be incorporated in the new merger. Verizon had to be schooled on how important DEI is to shareholders. I guarantee that this will be a new Verizon!

Every one of these sales has never resulted in a layoff of techs before going through. Actually the opposite, they hire techs. Now management....that's a different story.

Doubt it. How can they lay off 80-90 percent???? We are in states that have PUC regulations and need manpower? You think they will just dump everyone and take the PUC fines?

I'm a Verizon leader who has been through countless acquisitions --- MCI, XO, CyberTrust, etc. You guys need to look out for number 1 --> yourself. Expect 80 to 90% layoffs if you last until the acquisition is complete. Every bit of Frontier culture will be wiped out and what took days to do will take months -- ordering a new piece of equipment, getting approval for this or that, etc. Look at Verizon's track record... terrible! They are only buying you for the fiber access. That's it.

OSP AND I&R will be safe I worry about call center, assigners, dispatch, cutters.

I couldn’t care less about call centers or at sit at home office people. They’ve held us back for far too long. I HOPE they never make it to Verizon.

For anyone to say this wasn’t planned would just be incompetence. This is what Verizon has always done. Spin off companies and saddle them with debt they didn’t want knowing they will have no just but to declare bankruptcy and fold. Then any scraps left on the table Verizon buys up for chump change. Brilliant business strategy. Anyone remember Idearc? Come on. Open your eyes. It’s always been there.

The acquisition, which is expected to close in about 18 months.
Verizon said on Thursday it would buy Frontier Communications in an all-cash deal valued at $20 billion, as the U.S. wireless carrier looks to boost its fiber network.

Verizon sells 1st 13 states for 5 billion to Frontier. Frontier runs like a tu-d and runs off good Talent. Verizon then sells Texas, Florida and California for 10 billion to Frontier.
Verizon buys it all back with a lot more fiber placed for 10 billion cash? Tell me this wasn't a plan.
