Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Are the salary ranges reported on Glassdoor about right?

Trying to gauge if I’m fairly compensated. Technical role (think geoscience). Are the recent salary entries on Glassdoor roughly in line with your numbers, for the same yoe? Feeling underpaid and currently looking elsewhere.

“ Then again, maybe you're too d-mb to work for Shell. Good luck in the layoff round.”

As if working for Shell specifically requires intelligence.

We have:

  1. A FEW smart folks who know what matters technically and are smart enough to stay out of management.
  2. Operators that know what’s needed.
  3. Operators that live on a high horse that we’d be better off without.
  4. Some very smart folks chasing pipe dreams. A necessary expense.
  5. Recent graduates from prestigious schools that have no real experience.
  6. Managers from the prestigious school crowd and/or have licked enough boot to get in the “in” management crowd.
  7. A FEW actual managers with actual experience and even fewer with leadership qualities.
  8. A bunch of people that just want some semblance of security and minimal bullsh-t.
  9. Scapegoats. Lots and lots of scapegoats.

Working at Shell is no longer a badge of honor and is in no way a representation of individual intelligence.

Look at your PIR. If it's close to 100% and most of the folks with your level of experience are at your JG then you are compensated just fine.

You seem like a troll asking if it's total compensation. Because if you actually work for Shell, you know it's base salaries that people are posting. You will also know your bonus percent and the variations within it. Go to the HR website and pull out the Global Pay policy. Use the numbers for your country and your IPRO to fill in the blank. Then again, maybe you're too d-mb to work for Shell. Good luck in the layoff round.

Shell overpays. You are fairly compensated and the necessity for your position is likely questionable. You likely provide more input than produce output. Ride it while you’ve got it.

Geosciences 100% PIR salaries (USA based staff) as of 2024

2: $286,000
3: $239,000
4: $199,000

Each subsequent JG 100% PIR increases by ~20%

@gbf+1uktkg6u Thanks for the numbers, are they total comp?

@bqe+1uktkg6u, JG3, US, 12yoe, ~240k, stagnant. I know the overall average on glassdoor is underestimating due to old data, so i'm only looking at more recent entries, i.e., after 2021.

I know for fact the glassdoor estimates for Exxon are too low, so wondering if Shell numbers are also similarly biased.

USA Tier 1/standard is underpaid.
JG4 range 122k-182K
JG3 range 146K-218K

USA Tier 3/ deepwater/technical is much higher
JG4 range 159K-239K
JG3 range 191K-287K

Shell is fairly competitive if you’ve been here since before transition 09 and are in a spot where you’re above 100% in range. Those folks are all JG3+ from seniority alone. I know a few in that bucket that have never been below 100PIR except right after a progression, and usually only until the next merit cycle.

Less than that and it’s not even close. They’ve been pushing to keep folks from progressing, and on top of that merit bumps have been awful so even without progressions a lot of folks are lucky to be at 90% in range.

Tell us which scale you are on and which country. Someone will pull out their IPRO and give you the range or the 100% mark for your job. And to answer your question I've found the Glassdoor to underestimate all geoscience and shell salaries in the US. Plus, all the data are averaged over a decade, so don't account for inflation.

Upstream total compensation at Shell is very competitive at JG3+ level in the US At JG5-4, its a bit less and the brand/training etc matters more. Other companies offer better vacation and differentiated perks.
