Our economy is more finance, speculation and magical value than anything else. Innovation, research, breakthroughs, knowledge, production, are all apparently for a--holes. When I see how much “leadership” is being paid for extracting cash and moving money around, I want to scream. Especially when I compare it to how much we, who actually have decent degrees and know the ins and outs of whole industries and science, are getting paid. This system will prove not sustainable and soon.

This OP nailed it.
I love science. I love technology. I love discovery and innovation. Science gives us a deep knowledge of how the world around us works and the technology we produce from it helps humanity. I am proud of what I have accomplished in my career. I would hate myself if I was a paper pusher, number cruncher, or money mover.
Why do we, as STEM professionals, invest ourselves in a company like Shell that has shown its incompetence? We can take our degrees and our experience and go somewhere else that values our contributions.
But first, I will stay until the end to make Shell pay me to leave.
Nothing new the creative accounting finance people have been this way my entire working life since 1990. Only difference now is they dont even try to hide the game now.
In the past they would not rub it in your face as much
What you describe are rent seekers, and their time is almost over.
It’s peak fiat funny money phase. Stack sats and chill. In 10 years bitcoiners will inherit the earth.
The leaders have no clothes. Only the children can tell them. Bring your kids to work.
I am a proud STEM a--hole.
Would you join nVidia or SpaceX today ?
Because this imaginary economy based on appearances will crash, and we’ll turn to people who actually get “stuff” done to bail us out.
