Thinning of the herd

If 9/12 comes to fruition (I believe so), that makes the 5th layoff in a little over 2 years. It's obvious Qcom will continue to thin the herd state-side in their plan to establish a new herd offshore. My humble advice, any engineer short of design, should take matters into their own hands and leave on your own accord. It's much harder to secure a new position elsewhere amongst the laid-off masses.

People shting on H1Bs here are simply d-mb loosers. If you were smart you would be working for FAANG making +500K$, not whining here. Your outdated skills will soon not be needed anymore, AI will finish you off!

@1rci: Yes many US born kids who study STEM do not work in STEM. The reason is that the H1B who studied subsidized engineering school in India is ready to work for $55 per hour (ongoing rate for fresher who is hired as a Qualcomm CWF) whereas US born fresher cannot (due to student loan, rent, car loan and insurance and so on). The H1B is happy to live in 4 people per 2 bed apt whereas we just cannot - just simple hygiene purposes.

i believe maybe 40-60% of people who get stem degrees do not work in stem fields

Engineers are like hairs on porky's head. One by one jumping ship or getting plucked until there's nothing left. Then growing a beard on the other side of the world to compensate. His head is a metaphor for the company.

@bog: You are absolutely right. The clan not only survives but thrives. When we were about to go into undergrad, these CEO's told us that they need foreign workers because not enough of us study STEM. We went into STEM branches, worked our behinds off, borrowed tuition at 11% usury rates and graduated. Now they tell us that the new paradigm is "geo-shifting" to India because these same CEO's need to give "value to the shareholder". We are sitting on six-figure debt and may soon be staring at pink slips and booking appointments to unemployment offices while the same CEO in a few months posts a job and hires a H1B. Shame on these Wall St predators.

While Q is busy playing with AI and PCs, their bread and butter modem is turning into stale old toast. I agree with OP—not only should you get out of Q, but maybe steer clear of modems too. Modem skills are about as relevant now as being a blacksmith in the age of Teslas.

OP is speaking the truth. We heard first hand there will be cuts and it’s obvious that more jobs are moving to India. Look at why there are so many freakin Indians in SD and SC… the answer is pretty obvious since every Indian manager hires yet another one from the same clan so this helps with the transition of jobs. Hire some American born engineers and create some level of diversity. The best years are behind us and if you don’t get the raise or stock refreshers you deserve then move on.
