Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

The reason Citi’s culture is not coherent is…

Because of the way they bring employees on from international offices and promote them quickly. There is no consistent culture or set of norms. Just employee competition and infighting. Eventually the brains drain and Citi is left with the lackluster industry laggards….

Am I right or what?

The company effectively has no culture, unless presenteeism, pet projects and licking a55 are considered to be defining attributes

We are seen as only resources at this company. However, managers and others carefully underplay those who have more experience, skill, and education than them. It's a sad but true cycle here at this company.

The overseas culture is really hard to work with. They make everything feel like a competition and there’s no team spirit. I am sick of this

Another thing I want to add to the post. If I am able to get a grasp on the material and starting to become a point of contact in the est hours, The overseas team work 12+ hours to catch up on that gained knowledge and gatekeeping the new found knowledge after. There are more resources/team mates to retain the information than it is in the states.

It almost feels someone taking your seat when you leave for a bathroom break in the movie theaters. You made the effort to schedule and purchase the seat for your movie ticket and someone takes your seat after, to avoid conflict, just find the next available seat.

at this point, it feels like me vs the overseas team. They run the show while I am their pawn to do tasks. I get worked assigned directly from them and not my manager. I work in silo due to the time zone difference. If I need to update them on my work, I have to schedule on their time zone and this forces me to work more than 8 hours a day. Even when the work is going smoothly, my boss forces me to get periodic checkups with the overseas team. The time zone difference and many vs one model is very tiring. Its just struggling to survive since I work alone while the overseas team has each other to bounce ideas if they get stuck. The hardest challenge is the gatekeeping of information. its hard to keep up with 15+ employees overseas when its just one person in the USA location that is not a manager.

I second, skills are the key. That plays a more important role than the diploma. The diploma gets your foot in the door, after that, what you learn in a real working environment trumps what was learned in school. After 5 years, what you learned in school is obsolete, especially if you work in the tech field. If hiring managers still waive degree requirement after someone worked 5+ years in the industry, then that is something to probably question if you might want to work there.

A diploma means nothing in our times

Skills are key

A college degree only means that such a person is able to tolerate being bullied by people above them

Please don't be surprised that someone would rather keep an employee who does the job
than someone who masturbates with his diploma

You’re somewhat right. We also need to add the legacy employee problem. Alot of these people were placed into roles 20 - 30 years ago and without any proper training or higher education were promoted to VP SVP MD. If you go and apply now Citi requires a Masters in most cases for those same roles minimum a bachelors. Ive seen many younger employees with degrees get laid off during this re-org while the high-school diploma legacy employee is still employed at Citi with their big title. Citi has become so unattractive to work for especially knowing that Im more educated and have more outside industry experience than my managers. The credentials of the staff now have significantly suffered after the layoffs in the last 12 months.
