Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Can Exxon stop rewarding low performers?

Not only do they nearly always manage to get away with it, but instead of being fired, they get sidelined and their work often gets dumped on the rest of us. Ultimately, they get paid for doing nothing and we are punished for being reliable and coming through. When will this end?

The world is full of willing people.

Those willing to work and those willing to let them. It is the curse of competence.

EM just needs to stop rewarding arrogance and stop promoting competition between coworkers.

Less than 10 year person. Make every effort possible to line up another job. Unless you have recently been given a new boss that will help you or a new job scope that can propel you measurably above your colleagues, you might get same ranking.

Genuine question for folks, am I sc--wed if I got two NIs in a row and I'm under 10 years of experience. They switched me around quite a few roles and haven't really been able to find a niche. Will I be able to make it out of this or should I start planning my exit?

EM needs to stop pushing DEI low performers to the top of the rank groups.

I had a DEI low performer that everyone placed in the middle just below my other two direct reports. This was the final rank order agreed by all.

When the RG numbers published online for communication, the bottom person was 27 points above the two people that performed much better. I brought this mistake to the manager of HR only to be told that obviously after the ranking session, HR performed a “distribution” assessment and moved certain minorities up the rank list to meet target distributions.

In summary, a low performer was ranked far above the persons that outperformed him, then this number factors into promotions, raises, and future positions which that low performer did not earn.

This madness needs to stop. Rank people as per performance and stop fake DEI initiatives.

@OP Everyone working in O&G is a low performer. That’s the whole point. It’s the only industry I can think of where someone can be unqualified, incompetent, and make good money while doing almost no work.

This is so true all across the company. Lunatics in charge of the ship. Exxon wants leaders but at what cost. I am on the way out NRE and will quiet quit on my way out. I laugh when I see the fools staying till 7 or 8 o clock at night little do they know they will get dinged for time management. If they gave me something exciting to work on I would do it with all force but they only give me meaningless low tech work to do. The exciting and high profile work is given to the young hippos for their advancement and accomplishments. If you notice people like me just kind of fade away one day we are here the next we are gone. We just disappear never to return. Many are retiring at 55 asap and giving hours notice.
I know a person who tried to get fired at 52 to 55 while they were NRE for age discrimination lawsuit. The first year he was put on PCP not PIP and he did nothing on it. At the end he was told he did not complete the program but was ok. He was told to try to work harder and improve. He continued to mail it in for the next few years. He was careful to adhered to all safety, dr-g and other things that could get you terminated.
the next few years he was ranked good and NI. He was always warned to work hard and improve to which he smiled and laughed inside about. He continued like this until 58 when he was piped. He told me it was the best time of his life at exxon because no stress at work.

EM should really stop rewarding low performing HiPos.
I interviewed a HiPo recently on an IPR and she admitted to knowing nothing about the project, knowing nothing about her position, and outright said she is being moved rapidly through varied positions and we should not expect her to know the details of that job that she was already moved out of.
Arrogance far stronger than ability. She will eventually be a VP or EVP, or maybe even a P.

We have way too many advisors who have nothing to advise, way too many technology integrators who have no clue what they are supposed to be doing, way too many managers who don’t even know how to manage themselves let alone others, supervisors who would claim they are just messengers and had nothing to do with decision making and hence they don’t own sh-t. Instead of cutting the fat, we are good at cutting bones and meat. We are ExxonMobil, a dysfunctional family!

High Performer in Life, Low Performer At Work over here. Thank you for your service. You make sure that I can still pay my mortgage while I get my other business off the ground. Keep up the good work, HiPo!
