Work/life balance

What happened to the work/life balance? I used to be able to finish everything in my normal hours. Now, I'm lucky if I don't go over 60 hours each week. Usually, I'm at 70+. I'm about to throw in the towel and quit if something doesn't change sometime soon.

For those who say you are an id--t to work more than 8 hours a day: this is simply false (in the private tech sector of US or Asia). Workers are at-will hires. The company does not actually need to have (or state) any reason at all to let you go. Refuse to work enough hours? Bye-bye. (I'm not saying I agree at all with that state of affairs - that's just how it is, no matter how unhealthy).

OP is an id--t . There’s nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow. Time with family and friends is more important than anything at the Q.

Is this a complain or bragging? only work 8-10 hours a day! your colleagues has/had been working 14-16 hours a day, wait until a day you become manager or Sr. director, you have the luxury to work 6-8 hour a day!

most other staff or Sr. Staff engineers also suffered the long hours.

If you are working 60+ hours a week for any reasonable length of time (> 4 weeks say), you're the patsy at the table. Ask yourself if people in N and in the country club are working as hard as you.

If you want reasonable work-life balance, then you might want to consider looking outside the private tech sector (especially US & Asia). You will likely trade off less money for a better life.

I sure appreciate the Labor Day weekend to spend some much needed quality time with family and for myself. I am so turned off with the continuous layoff environment and the mounting work load that I really don’t care anymore. Why put in the 60+ hour work weeks, it’s not worth it for my mental state so I am proactively looking to leave to find an employer that values you as an individual as opposed to being micromanaged on how often you badge in and being so cheap with no raises last year. Any others feel the same?

They try to say the right things, but when push comes to shove, they don't care about you or you family. Treat it as such, think of it as pay for work, that's it.

What do you mean, "What happened to the work/life balance?" It's still listed on the Qualcomm Mission and Values plaque. You just need to dust it off and read it again! :)

I'm not surprised. First, the repeated RIF's make more work for the survivors. Second, working serious overtime is "in" across the industry, at least for US and Asia. Q wants to be as "serious" as the other major players. Europe seems more rational about work-life balance (and the "world's happiest countries" tend to be clustered in Europe / Scandinavia).
