Thread regarding CVS layoffs

If laid off, how would one obtain a contractor position?

Job postings are for FTE CVS employees but I know many departments hire contractors. Do you have to know the outside contracting company and look at their postings on their separate website? How would one find that info?

First, non competes are a non issue. they are unenforceable, just a threat. a company cannot stop you from gaining employment else where.

Definitely use LinkedIn to find jobs with similar job descriptions (vendors get the job descriptions from CVS and just wipe them of references to CVS). CVS has a unique global technology suite with a mix of older tech and some newer tech - find postings that include these technologies. it will be easy to spot the CVS related roles.

The agencies usually don't say who the client is that goes with the job description, so could be any client. But, who cares if the job fits. Another approach if your position is being outsourced to a vendor, your knowledge of business processes and systems might be an asset, so look up a few appropriate managers on LinkedIn and ping them to see if any needs. Don't underestimate the value of your knowledge in the industry.

Pretty much, you dont. If you are let go, you are on a list that they wont hire back, not even as a contractor. Reasoning could be security, like dont give a potentially unhappy former employee access again, but most likely its that the jobs are being outsourced and the company they are going to has their own people they got in-preparation for the contract already, from their own pool of workers (frequently h1b visa holders that will be more tied to a company for sponsorship and they can pull other visa related fees from) and more in line with the goal of driving more work to the contracting company. Its not like the old days when a project is controlled in house and they need a few more bodies so they will get them as contract workers, or even older when they cycled FTEs to perot sys. and kept them working as contractors, they are entirely shifting not just roles but departments and functions to outside vendors who have no interest in hiring you.
You can still try if you want. Look for work locations in Woonsocket or Cumberland for retail and chances are that job will be at CVS. Job titles will also have familiar names to them you will recognize the format if looking in other locations.

You don't have to find vendors, they will find you to work for Convenient Value Store.

I thought there was a new non compete law and it basically only applies to VP and above, pretty sh-t!y to lay off all these people then not allow them to work. Corp America is so fcked. It’s really sad bc some of us have 15+ years of tenure and actually like our job but we’re worried about how we’re going to survive if impacted. I wish they’d give up their bonuses like other companies did to save their people.

How do you find the companies that contract workers to CVS? After severance (if lucky enough to get one), I’d be interested in working for CVS as a contractor, but would not know how to find those positions. They would not be on CVS careers site, so where do you find the contracting agencies that source for CVS? Usually they do not post the company the role is for.

You would need to be hired as an employee of that contracting company and they would need to staff you on a CVS engagement. As others have said that may (or may not) effect your severance... if you were to be laid off that's definitely a question you should ask HR on the way out the door. Also, CVS may have to waive your non-compete if they are still holding laid-off folks to them (they did in last year's layoffs).

Agreed, with below. You will forgo severance if you were to take a contract position with CVS. However, I turned my open to work on in LinkedIn, recruiters only, and I heard from someone almost daily. I had full benefits other than PTO, BUT was bringing home about $1500 a month more in income. So essentially was making up for it. I also looked up reviews of the company online; before taking the position. The company I worked for had a 3.8 out of 4.

You can collect severance as a contractor. But forfeit if go back as employee

You wouldn’t qualify for your severance if you went back. Even as a contractor.

If you get laid off….why would you want to become a contractor for the company that laid you off.

My experience as a contractor was higher pay but zero benefits so it was a wash in the end.
