Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Badging out

Apparently, the reason behind the new badge out procedures going into effect is so that they can communicate who might still be in the building in the event of emergency. So apparently we have to badge out while the building is burning? Okay, good to know!

Unionizing would at least give employees a seat at the table. Today, no one advocates for the employees. SG pockets the profits, C-suite gets their big bonuses. Union would get employees paid fairly and perhaps stop the process of laying off to rehire at a cheaper rate.

Unionizing would ensure that everyone goes down. It will probably happen anyway, but trying to unionize this late in Staples existence wouldn't help anything.

It's not just HR, because they would only a limited interest. You have to include Associate Relations and Asset Protection in that equation, and it's anyone's guess what their interests are, but it is not to the benefit of the employee. Unionizing may offer far better protection than Staples' lies about how they value employees... until it's time to lay you off.

The more I think about this the more frustrated I get. What about those of us that often start our day at home, go into the office for a solid 7-7.5 hours and then need/want to leave to watch a child at a sporting event, or dance class, etc. and then finish the day with an additional 2+ hours of work once home. Does that stop?? If Covid has taught us anything it’s that work/life balance truly can exist!
Signed,
Frustrated. Sad. Mad.

Each area has a place to gather in the event of emergency. It is the manager's responsibility to make certain their team is all accounted for at the designated meet point.

Thanks for this answer. The fact it was masked in long informational email with random “other” FYI is sure telling about their commitment to transparency.

Upon activation of the fire alarm system, the turnstyles must automatically open, and remain open until the fire alarm is manually reset. This has to allow free egress.

So to be clear, yes, badging out is a HR request, so they can see how long you are in the building for.

The absurdity of the email is at another level even for JD. "Single file folks and badge out while the corridor is filling with smoke because we care about your safety". Good grief!

This is nothing more then HR wanting to crack down on the number of hours people are in the office. Must mean a massive layoff is imminent but they want to thin the herd first so there is less severance to be paid out.

Bingo. 100% will be used to track time in office for the next set of layoffs.
