Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Alternatives

A lot of posters talk about how bad it is at Q. As a fairly new hire, I see work life balance is not bad and San Diego scene is really gr8. Working at the hw/sw interface is actually neat. What am I missing? I have friends working at other places 10-12 hours and kiss a##. Most tech had layoffs (except apple). What am I missing?

I left Q last year. I quickly found another job but many have suffered as their skill set was pretty much useless outside Q. If you spend 10 + years in Q, you are pretty much dead and useless.

Remember the tag line for the movie “Office Space”? >> Work su-ks. << that‘s most of us. Find something/somewhere you can tolerate and feed your 401K to the max, live within your means, look up “FIRE” strategy for your financial planning and the sooner it will all be over with.

Although I was one of those affected by the recent Q layoffs, I agree that Q and SD are not too bad. I honestly had no complaints, other than the pre- and post layoff stress that people experience (and there will likely be more layoffs). My only reservation is that SD is expensive, and not a tech hub like Silicon Valley. Your next job after Q might require you to relocate. Not a big deal if you are still young and single, but if you have a family ...

You’re not missing anything OP. I agree and I’ve been at Q for a WHILE. Complainers on this thread tend to kiss nvidia and apple’s butts and seem to think it’s all sunshine and roses at those places. When in reality, it’s way more cutthroat than they think and those same corporations wouldn’t give these whiners the time of day. They really have no idea…

"It depends on the team"

DEPENDS is an adult diaper. So yes, I agree. It's Depends.

I guess you are referring to nvdia? As apple outsources it's AI.

Some chip companies lead AI, innovate and build new chip designs, change the world.

Other chip companies just chase cheap labor, outsource as much as possible, and throw their employees under the bus.

Where would you rather be?

San Diego tech scene has already lulled you into its "charm". Q is a mediocre place to upskill. Don't complain when your job is "geoshifted" and you cannot compete in the job market.

In every company there are bad teams, Q is not different. Like in products reviews, most satisfied customers don't leave a review. Same thing here, you find just people with negative experiences. What I would advice you though is to learn as much as u can and keep your skills sharp. Q is opening a lot of positions in India, they will let go a lot of people in US when the knowledge transfer is complete. Just search open positions by region. To be fair, Google, Amazon Microsoft and Apple are doing the same.
