Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell should thin out management layers

That would solve all of our problems. The company would achieve major cost savings without losing any of the employees who actually contribute. Let's face it, our management layers are bloated and filled with people who do nothing but attend useless and repetitive meetings all day. We sure as he-l won't miss them if they're gone.

They are trying to reduce managers. That’s why the spans and layers Target has gone from 12:1 to 15:1. The only way to do that is reduce the number of managers. And if you layoff individual contributors that’s even more managers you have to reduce.

Exactly. My function laid off dozens and dozens over multiple waves, but all the directors and execs are in their same roles. Not one has been impacted in the past 2 years. So you now have overpaid leaders doing the work of individual contributors, because they're part of the same club. It's disgusting.

Regrettably, the entrenched corporate culture resists such organizational changes, as they would disrupt the existing pyramidal structure, placing individuals in uncomfortable positions immediately. While it is evident that numerous unproductive roles exist, which should be pruned for the company’s overall health, these positions are often preserved within the executive ranks due to cronyism and nepotism. To be clear, this does not apply to the majority, but it is nonetheless a significant factor. Consequently, the company often opts to lay off employees at the lower levels first, viewing them as expendable. Although this may seem justifiable from a payroll perspective and beneficial for short-term stock options, it is, in my view, a shortsighted strategy. Such actions send a clear, albeit troubling, message to consumers and stakeholders, ultimately affecting the public perception of the company's strength. From my experience within this organization, I have witnessed instances where cost-cutting measures intended to save a few hundred thousand dollars have led to dozens of millions in losses, with clients migrating to competitors and revenue lost forever, all while feedback on these missteps fell on deaf ears.

"with people who do nothing but attend useless and repetitive meetings all day."

Do you think they want to go to these meetings? They are bored to death in those meetings and are constantly trying to get rid of those but somebody higher overrides them.
