Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Voluntarily exiting

Looking for serious and honest opinion if one should pursue an offer in a safe company (doesn‘t fire people, cannot name), located within a couple of mins reach, better job role, great culture, but compensation will be down 40% (due to RSUs majorly).
Also if RTO is enforced in BC, I will not be able to move, several 100 miles away.

Would you stay or leave?

I know. After tax the money is so small. Just take your RSU amount you see in your portal and you can simply cut it in half or even more to get the real money that will be deposited to your bank account. That is if you can really get out at a decent stock price and not be fooled into holding the stocks into the AI bubble bursting.

Most people I know don't factor in the capital gains tax they must pay when they sell RSUs for a profit later. Your RSU benefit is likely less than you believe. Also, your deferred RSUs are only worth something if you can stay a Broadcom employee -- that's not in your control and a high-risk assumption. HT is predictable. More layoffs are inevitable at VMW.

I left VMW before the deal was inked. I have worked at companies like BC before. Years of my life I'll never get back. Money is one thing. Your sanity is another. I wound up taking a pay cut when I left. I don't regret that decision.

since they can fluctuate and have little to no real value.

Such ignorance on display!

Two big AI customers Google and Facebook. Google on the verge of being broken up. Facebook next. Their AI datacenters will be distributed among a 100 small companies. Broadcom will be the next Tiktok and Huawei. All these Chinese companies will be severely curtailed. Things will look very different in a year.

Do you want to work for the Chinese? Are you Chinese? If you are Chinese then you should be fine. Get all the great work and get to stay forever.

A 40% reduction in base pay would be a hard "no thank you" from where I am sitting.
RSUs are a variable part of compensation, and should not be considered, since they can fluctuate and have little to no real value.

Of course, that's an emotional / financial view. Let's look at it objectively.
Let's assume a salary of 100K (for simplicity) at Broadcom.
That would be 60K at the new company.

Broadcom has said they pay at the 50th perecentile. 100th percentile would be 200K.

This is a company that pays at the 30th precentile. It's going to be hard to dig out of that hole to get reasonable pay.

Hard pass and wait at Broadcom while continuing to look for better offers.

OP here: Yes staying until beginning of next year is possible.

It’s basically money v/s everything else.

Can you make it until end of December? If so, you'll get a round of RSUs and your bonus. Not sure how important that is or if the new offer can wait.

I would say it depends on the elements within the equation. If money has a starring role big time within said elements, Broadcom is for you. Let's be honest, not many companies can match what Broadcom is paying at the moment.
But with the way you described your situation, you are better of taking the other job.

Some teams have been cut 90% and are increasing revenues in the short term. Do you think you will survive a 90% cut?

If you value your health and honor and self respect then leave. Once you lose them you will lose your family and everything. If you are only looking at money then stay.

RSU will look different after the AI bubble bursts. Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.

If the cash component (not including RSUs) is equivalent or a little better take the other job.
