Has anyone quit in the past few months? I got lucky and received a great job offer that starts on 10/15, but I'm wondering, if I give two weeks' notice, will they make me work it or let me go right away? I don't want to burn bridges by leaving without notice, but I don't want to miss this opportunity either.

If you have an office or workspace on company property, remove all your personal effects before giving notice. Also delete any non-work related electronic documents and change your passwords if you don't want them known. Some people won't be allowed to work after giving notice.
Do what is right for you. Company believes we are all replaceable so let them replace you. Loyalty is dead.
I had an engineer quit to work for a competitor, planned to work his 2 week notice period.
HR demanded I escort him out of the building that morning.
Tell them you’re going to work for a competitor.
Company will do what it has to do regardless if you put in a two weeks notice. There's a chance you still get marked as "no rehire" if you give them a two weeks notice. In addition, possibly let you go if you give them a two weeks notice.
It's all about how you feel and your finances. Some people still believe in giving two weeks while others could careless,
2 weeks is customary, but not mandatory. Just explain the situation. It's a business transaction only.
Who said you have to quit one job to start the other?
