Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

How many people in Sales went to work for a competitor?

Are there any awkward conversations when calling on the same customers?

I switched. Kept my same accounts but work for a direct competitor. Customers don't really care. Just don't expect them to immediately switch and give you all of their business. They may like and trust you but deals in the works that were previously vetted before your switch will be hard to completely stop.

On a lighter note- my new company was more concerned and I had to have private meetings with legal and sign documents citing I didn't bring anything with me i shouldn't (old quotes, tech profiles, emails, live optics, etc)

Non-competition agreements really don't exist anymore, but non-solicitation agreements still exist. Most people will test the waters when switching to a competitor and call into old accounts until Dell legal writes a nasty letter reminding them of their non-solicitation agreement. At that point you just stop calling that customer until 12 months past separation and then it's back to calling.
