that we should be grateful for our jobs. We all are skilled people, and we shouldn’t be grateful to anyone for the opportunity to make them piles of money. That's a defeatist position which begs us to become submissive and not to look for our own interest while working in a company which looks only after its own interest. And while we are at it, the way these layoffs are conducted makes me wonder if leadership of this company is looking after the company’s interest, or only their own. If only their own, well, it’s a dead-end.

I believe direction does come from the top. For as much people think this is localized or a certain area of leadership is doing this, no way. It's too pervasive. I've got colleagues I've known for years who are great people in managerial roles. It isn't coming from them. I am hoping to an end of this but I don't know when it'll happen. They must have metrics to have some sort of endpoint. Where that is, I don't know.
The grateful for job comment? I wouldn't have used those words. You may have an inexperienced manager or one that doesn't care. I would've said we need to move forward and see what happens. Why wouldn't the manager say something like that? I have not heard the grateful comment in my neck of the woods. I am trying to be positive. Trying is the word.
They will say anything. It’s normal. You see what is happening. It’s up to you to make a decision.
be grateful for family, good health, etc., but a job is a transactional relationship - work done for pay
Go and get a different job so with all your skills
